Wildfires can have devastating effects, but microbes and fungi play key roles in helping ecosystems recover. Dr. @sydneyglassman.bsky.social discusses some of her latest research, stories from her scientific journey, advice, & more: www.peoplebehindthescience.com/dr-sydney-gl... #science #scicomm 👩‍🔬

In new work by Elizah Stephens, she looks at soil N emissions after wildfires. Wildfire increased soil NO emissions. N2O emissions did not differ significantly; however, only burned soils produced N2O fluxes that were statistical outliers up to ∼165 × higher. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

It looks like there will be an open postdoc position in my lab soon. I'll be looking for someone with substantial wet-lab experience in microbiology / microbial ecology / evolution / physiology. If everything goes well, an ad will be coming. But if you know someone, ask them to reach out already.

Pyrophilous fungi are fungal species that thrive after wildfire. A genetic analysis of this group uncovered an ecologically important tradeoff between fast growth and the ability to break down post-fire aromatic carbon compounds. In PNAS: ow.ly/1A2P50XVxZc
Morels were among the species analyzed. This delicious group is well known for thriving in burnt areas. Stock photo.

Feels like a good time to re-share my paper comparing teaching #rstats formula and #tidyverse syntaxes. (Not quite a base/tidyverse comparison, I couldn't bring myself to do that. But if YOU feel passionately about it, why don't you run that experiment?) Again, PDF format is the one to look at.
