Three Star Short Takes
By Peter Ostroff
Beverly Hills Weekly

To Settle or Not?
Last week it was reported, incor-
rectly, by another newspaper that the
Board of Education had voted to re-
ject a settlement of the Lifschitz law-
suit, a settlement that required only
that Dr. Amanda Stern replace Sigalie
Sabag as Vice President of the Board
of Education.
In fact, there was no such vote.
We know that because had there been
one, the Board would have announced
it publicly in a report of actions taken
during closed session meetings.
Rather, the decision to reject the set-
tlement was made, insisted upon and
implemented solely by Board Pres-
ident Judith Manouchehri acting
alone. There was no vote. Rather, sub-
sequent to the rejection, the law firm
representing all of the defendants, Ms.
Manouchehri, Sigalie Sabag, Russell
Stuart and the District was replaced
by four different law firms, each one
representing one of the defendants.
Stay with me. I will explain below
the practical significance of Ms. Ma-
nouchehri’s refusal to allow a vote on
whether to accept a settlement that she didn’t want.
I will not speculate as to why Ms.
Manouchehri acted as she did – you
can reach your own conclusion.
Spoiler Alert: I do not support Ms.
Manouchehri’s bid for re-election to
the Board of Education. Some might
say that I am biased against her. I dis-
agree. Bias is an irrational predisposi-
tion. There is nothing irrational about
my views.
The case now moves forward toward
trial with lots of legal firepower con-
fronting Daniel Lifschitz, an intrepid
young lawyer if ever there was one.
All in a battle to attempt to defend
the retaliatory action of Ms. Ma-
nouchehri. Presumably the fees for
the law firm quartet will be paid by the
District and/or its insurers. I wonder
whether Ms. Manouchehri would have
unilaterally rejected the settlement if
she was personally paying any part of
the legal fees.

In 'Rendezvous with Rama', Arthur C. Clarke laid out some fictional history, and I remember thinking it was odd he felt like including a mention of African nations have a run of dominance in the World Cup in the 2030s. But it's 2026, and it looks like he may have been on to something. Well done.

“You are good to go.” Good to go?!?! This is what ICE tells a young woman they tossed out into dangerously freezing temperatures after four agonizing days in detention at Whipple. Today’s front page Strib report: www.startribune.com/no-humanity-...
The young Muslim woman detained in a locked Whipple bathroom with three men said she never thought this could happen to her.
She saw America as a land of opportunity after a childhood in a refugee camp.
She hopes to become a nurse or a flight attendant. Her criminal record, she said, consists of one speeding ticket.
With Whipple's holding facilities filled, the woman said, agents eventually moved her to another locked bathroom by herself. There was an air vent at the door's bottom. When she saw federal agents' footsteps, she banged for help.
On her third night of detention, agents took in two new detainees: an African immigrant and her 7-month-old baby girl. She said the immigrant told her they had been detained as the mother took her baby to a doctor to be treated for influenza."When the woman arrived, she was screaming and crying and yelling, 'My baby is already sick!' " she recalled. " 'I don't want my baby to die!' "
The next morning, she said, the woman and baby were moved from the bathroom.
It wasn't until her fourth day of detention when the young woman was allowed to use a phone at the facility. When she heard her mother's voice, she burst into tears.
On the fifth day, agents drove her and two other recently released detainees to a light-rail station near Whipple. They took off her handcuffs and told her to call an Uber, even though she didn't have a phone. She borrowed one from another detainee.
As they released her into the cold, she recalls their simple words: "You are good to go."

Federal judge has ordered the release of Liam Ramos (the bunny hat boy) and his father. A brief and rather remarkable order. Clearly written to be shared widely, so please do. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
Ultimately, Petitioners may, because of the arcane United States immigration system, return to
their home country, involuntarily or by self-deportation. But that result should occur through a more
orderly and humane policy than currently in place.

I still can't wrap my brain around the Surgeon General for Trump 1.0 sounding like Paul Offit when it comes to vaccines and AOC with respect to universal health care.
a 4 tweet thread from this morning from Jerome Adams, Surgeon General during 1st Trump admin:

Many European countries skip universal hepatitis B birth doses, giving only to high-risk infants & starting routine vax at 6-8 weeks. Why do U.S. Hep B birth dose recs differ from Europe? 🤔

I’m glad you asked! 🧵👇🏽

Big factor: U.S. healthcare access. No universal coverage means prenatal screening & follow-ups can slip - late care or barriers leave some maternal status unknown, risking exposure. Birth dose provides immediate protection & boosts completion rates. Europe’s universal systems enable near-100% screening & lower transmission. 2/4

Paid parental leave matters too. Europe’s generous policies (often 20+ weeks) make follow-up vax visits easier & keep babies home longer, cutting early exposure risks. Studies link paid leave to better timely vaccination. The US lacks federal paid leave, so shorter maternity time hinders follow-ups. These differences drive the policy gap. 3/4

Finally: the birth dose is one of the most studied vaccines, with decades of data showing no serious risks for newborns. Yet without it, infected infants face ~90% risk of lifelong chronic Hep B, leading to cirrhosis or liver cancer (25% die prematurely). Infants' immune systems make them uniquely vulnerable to chronic infection vs adults (<5%). 4/4

I Want You to Understand Chicago
Politics Chicago
2025-11-08

I want you to understand what it is like to live in Chicago during this time.

Every day my phone buzzes. It is a neighborhood group: four people were kidnapped at the corner drugstore. A friend a mile away sends a Slack message: she was at the scene when masked men assaulted and abducted two people on the street. A plumber working on my pipes is distraught, and I find out that two of his employees were kidnapped that morning. A week later it happens again.

An email arrives. Agents with guns have chased a teacher into the school where she works. They did not have a warrant. They dragged her away, ignoring her and her colleagues’ pleas to show proof of her documentation. That evening I stand a few feet from the parents of Rayito de Sol and listen to them describe, with anguish, how good Ms. Diana was to their children. What it is like to have strangers with guns traumatize your kids. For a teacher to hide a three-year-old child for fear they might be killed. How their relatives will no longer leave the house. I hear the pain and fury in their voices, and I wonder who will be next.

Understand what it is to pray in Chicago. On September 19th, Reverend David Black, lead pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Chicago, was praying outside the ICE detention center in Broadview when a DHS agent shot him in the head with pepper balls. Pepper balls are never supposed to be fired at the head because they can seriously injure, or even kill. “We could hear them laughing as they were shooting us from the roof,” Black recalled. He is not the only member of the clergy ICE has assaulted. Methodist pastor Hannah Kardon was violently arrested on October 17th, and Baptist pastor Michael Woolf was shot with pepper balls on November 1st.

Understand what it is to sleep in Chicago. On the night of September 30th, federal agents rappelled from a Black Hawk helicopter to execute a raid on an apartment building on the South Sho…
