You the researcher are the expert on your research question. Others' expertise overlaps, but your contribution is unique. Remember this! By the time you're done dissertating, you have enough expertise to stand your own in that space. That's the whole point!

Page output is a shitty measure of academic productivity. Page input (reading), page recycling (draft/memo writing), and a VAST array of other tasks are productive academic activity! Give yourself credit for ALL of your work!

Not all of your writing will make the final draft. The process of thinking, talking, and draft-writing or memoing is necessary for productive scholarly writing sessions. Don't sell them short!

We can -and should - plan for uncertainty that we can foresee. What we can't foresee, however, are unknown unknowns. ALWAYS build in at least 10%, probably more like 20%, for unexpected and unforeseen types of hiccups!

A paper that feels like it's everywhere, mushrooming, or hydra-like often lacks a clear controlling argument that helps the author distinguish data from evidence. Talk with a friend or mentor to help clarify your argument!

Dissertations aren't supposed to be easy. They're pushing the boundaries of knowledge. They're not formulaic - no one-size-fits-all rules apply, including "every sentence needs a citation." If every sentence has a citation, where is your new original contribution? If you're stuck, let's talk. 30 min
