The reporting here highlights one of the major threats of Alpha School: not that Alpha School will proliferate per se, but that education leaders will decide to pilot Alpha's AI platform and open public education to be hollowed out from the inside or drift closer to Alpha's vision of education.

Right, okay everybody, I’ve had a lot of meetings and talks this week and I have to share some top line thoughts. Things are quite a bit worse than i am usually willing to share with people because panic does no good. It’s kinda bad. The baddies have the wind at their back. No denying that.

It is breathtaking. Like many things these days it is hard, but necessary, to figure what is a continuity and what is a rupture. EdTech has always been a private sector parasite feeding off the public sector. The rupture is AI EdTech is experimenting on the rich instead of the poor.

i am genuinely bewildered by people who say that the rise of white nationalism in the republican party is a response to the "woke left." like, did the woke left cause pat buchanan's 1992 presidential campaign? is the woke left why steve king had a long career in congress?

These legal tactics fit within a broader strategy of using public resources to advance conservative aims by any means necessary. Heads they win the case: tails they win by using public funds to pay for their legal loss and then using austerity measures to cut "undesirable" services.

This seems accurate! The online appendix provides a clearer definition of terms. Also of note: $25k + no college = not working class $25k + college = not working class
Screenshot of pp. 5-6 of the online appendix for report discussed in thread. Link to appendix: https://winometer-appendix.com/

Text in the screenshot reads:

2. Defining social class

The report’s primary class definition follows our Williams–Abbott Class Gaps report, broadened slightly to make fuller use of the data. The working class (WC) is respondents with no four-year college degree and a household income in roughly the middle of the national distribution (about $30,000–$150,000). The middle/upper class (MUC) comparison group is respondents with a four-year degree and household income of at least $80,000. Respondents who fall in neither group (e.g. low-income college graduates, high-income non-graduates) are unclassified on this scheme and are excluded from class contrasts but retained for full-sample estimates. For robustness we also report an education-only cut (WC = no four-year degree; MUC = degree). The table gives the unweighted respondent counts under each.

[Table]
Class scheme | Working class | Middle/upper | Unclassified
Income × education (primary) | 14,587 | 8,076 | 16,604
Education only | 25,753 | 13,514 | 0

“Unclassified” respondents do not meet either the WC or the MUC criteria under that scheme; they remain in full-sample (population) estimates but not in WC-vs-MUC contrasts.

I think getting blown out in North Carolina would do the most psychic damage to the GOP. The Dems have held the executive branch in the state, but there have been only three terms with Dem NC Senators since 1980. Only suggesting this since polling in NC race is somewhat similar to GA at the moment.

All seem somewhat generic. Option 3 sparks more curiosity for me, but it seems like it focuses attention in a different direction from the other options.

"Global-majority students" also does not seem to be a direct way to recognize race / ethnicity. It could, for instance, be used to refer to students who do not use glasses to read or who are taught math in school or who fall into any "majority" category.

Rob Wisc @robwisc.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
For instance, I use "non-White students" to refer to all students who are not White. But I would not use non-White students if I meant to refer to Black students or Indigenous students.

Rob Wisc @robwisc.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
I can see how the term "global-majority students" may critique phrases like "minority students" as used for racial / ethnic groups. However, precision seems more helpful when discussing demographics.
