It's called film "footage" because camera operators initially held the cameras with their feet. That changed after a film shoot in 1931, when an operator got a foot cramp and was forced to hold the camera in his hands. The "footage" he got that day was extraordinary. That man's name? Hans Cameraman.

I've written about Neets for the LRB. It is odd listening to recent debates about this completely ignore the overwhelming fact of this current crisis, that it is one of inactivity, disability, mental ill-health and neurodevelopmental disorders (as I discuss) www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Drummer here (so very much without perfect pitch): heard on its own it sounds normal to me; I'd never guess there was something wrong with it. Heard right after the real version I can easily tell the difference. Then, once the real one has anchored me, I can't hear the shifted one as "right" again

e.g. my French is terrible but I believe French, lacking the ability to do this with stress, does it instead with word order: "Marie a mangé le gâteau" = "Marie ate the cake", "C'est Marie qui a mangé le gâteau" = "*MARIE* ate the cake", "C'est le gâteau que Marie a mangé" = "Marie ate the *CAKE*"

…but those languages generally use different tools for the same outcome, so they maybe use pitch or loudness, or they have some grammatical features around emphasis, or they emphasise by changing word order, etc.

Rob Miller @robm.wtf · 15/07/2026
Some languages have strict rules around stress, or lack stress, and so can't do this kind of emphasis (which is called "prosodic focus") by stressing syllables…

So much of the collective English psyche is constipatedly stuck in the 1990s; would an England World Cup victory intensify that, or would it be some kind of karmic release, finally allowing us all to move on?
