Some people follow me because of comics, and some people follow me because of wrestling, but plenty of people who know me aren't familiar with either or both. Both fields tragically lost tremendous stars, recently. This is a kind of eulogy for those unfamiliar with their work.

A Brief tribute to two men who died young, who filled my life with joy. RIP Joshua Cassara and PAC.

I have been working on a longer reflection of Joshua Cassara’s work at Marvel Comics, and, today,1 I was working on a longer reflection on PAC and his life, but both have gotten too academic. Both became reflections on shared-universe serial storytelling, and why the artists in such genres end up meaning so much to their audiences, about the parasocial relationships one develops when, twice a week, you watch a man on live television break the laws of reality, or once a month when an artist defines, again, for you, over and over, how you see this heightened world, where you can actually believe that better things are possible. I may still post one or both; we’ll see. But I wanted to post something a little more personal, first, and I wanted to especially write something for those unfamiliar with the work of these men.

Both Joshua Cassara and Benjamin Satterley were taken from us very suddenly. Both men, in their own ways, made us believe that a human being could fly.

I just want to share with you one work created by each man.

If I'm sufficiently strong-willed, I will only log on on days where I post blogs for the next little bit, and I'll only log on for a window of time on those days. I will be turning notifications off on my phone regardless, though, so I apologize if a DM doesn't get to me right away.

Well then. he's released his statement. I guess that's all we'll ever know. He claims to have admitted guilt immediately, cooperated with the investigation, and he's tried to do what he can to make amends. Who knows if that's true. I hope that that's true. We will never know.

On Jacob Geller

I'm aware of the rape allegations against Jacob Geller, as well as the fact that his name is on a court-ordered list of UNC students disciplined for sexual violence. I've hesitated on whether to post anything about it, because the victim hasn’t been identified and I don’t want to participate in a retraumatizing conversation against their wishes. At the same time, as someone who has collaborated with Jacob Geller, I do not want my silence to be taken as endorsement.

For my part, I did not know about this and I wish I had. What justice and repair look like in cases like these are for the victim to decide, and I do not know their wishes or what accountability processes, if any, took place. However, strictly on a personal level, I’m uncomfortable having collaborated with someone who has presented himself as a nonthreatening feminist without ever disclosing his history of sexual violence to me or any other colleagues I’ve spoken to. I have no intention of ever working with Geller again. Beyond that, the person this happened to ought to be the ultimate authority on what happens next, and how they wish to tell their story if at all.
