What happens when economic change feels like a threat to masculinity? In Contexts, Dan Cassino examines how men’s political preferences change when the traditional breadwinner role becomes less secure. ➡️ doi.org/10.1177/1536... #Sociology #Masculinity #Gender #PoliticalSociology

"How well did you know Bruce Wayne?" Play it cool, don't give away your secret ID. "Slightly!" Shit, too casual. He's supposed to have just died and Gordon was his friend. "I'll miss him..." No, too much. Can't let Gordon know there's a link. "I guess!" Nailed it.

When I was seven(?), my parents took me to a fancy Cantonese restaurant with some friends of theirs. Very quiet, dignified, lots of tuxedo wearing waiters. Also the type of place and in the era where seafood was chosen live from tanks. My parents order a whole crab, naturally brought live to table.

Jumping off this to emphasise: "Trans ideology" is that trans people exist. Trans people *do* exist. You can meet them, some are on this very app! Ergo, opposition to "trans ideology" is opposition to the continued existence of a group of people. That's, in effect, a genocidal intent.

Dudek crossed the wide-expanse of road, its wide grey expanse circumscribing the city and choking his beloved wilderness like a noose around its neck. Their laws said no man could cross the six-lane road, but he ignored them, darting between the traveller's vehicles with catlike steps.

Happy once again to work with @alzabosoup.bsky.social in making this banner for their podcast episodes on Gene Wolfe's The Devil in a Forest!
An illustration depicting life in a medieval European village. Mercenaries appear entering the composition on the left, a lone rogue leans upon a building's wall and an Abbot is standing on the right, bible in hand. Smoke rises from trees in the background. In the center of the composition is a young boy.

Jack Haven too short to play Severian really, but what a Dr. Talos they'd make. Orlando's own Tilda Swinton for the Autarch. Same actor for adult Severian plays Katherine at the Feast. Justice Smith for Jonas. Manifesting.

The thing is, in all its iterations, the defining grievance of the age is just this: that somehow, somewhere, someone's life might be being made somehow slightly more bearable, and all the shits who line up on the wrong side of history cannot fucking stand it.

The problem with becoming middle aged having grown up in nerdy online spaces is you end up saying things like "Oh, that's my mate Dickjab The Truculent, we've been friends for ages. His real name's John or Jon or something. He's Ambassador to Sweden now."

Massively gratified to catch up a few days past completion to find my favourite event "won" (and also to find the Gene Wolfe comparison!) Wolfe defined good literature as "that which can be read by an educated reader, and reread with increased pleasure". Final Crisis is certainly that.

The thing about Green Lantern is it takes one of the foundational elements of the superhero--autonomy to pursue your own idea of what's good--and takes it away. You have a *boss*. And not in a mentor-protege sense where it's a personal relationship, but with big impersonal decrees and KPIs.

The thing is (broken record, broken record) caring about that is just another example of the consumer-king trap. Getting invested in site metrics or movie box office or any of the business side things is because people want their consumption to be validated as "correct" by mass consumption.

It’s hard to explain but tv was better when you couldn’t watch the show you wanted whenever you wanted to watch it and most of the shows were worse and the TVs were worse and the entire experience was worse, that’s when it was better
