No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

In the 1985 Doctor Who serial Vengeance on Varos, an authoritarian regime run by a weak man keeps the downtrodden population in line by broadcasting public executions to distract from the fact that it has tanked the economy through a combination of incompetence, arrogance and institutional cruelty.

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

But while Anthropic was fast to call the cops on a frustrated Claude user, the Standard also reported a key detail: Anthropic refused to show police the actual messages, citing Anthropic’s internal policy. In short, Anthropic reported a user for in-platform speech, and then refused to provide police with evidence of actual wrongdoing.

I'm finding it helpful to ask whether a particular use of technology refines or dilutes information. Blowing out a two sentence prompt into a two page press release is dilutive. Everybody can see that there's no value added. I think that's a major part of the objection to "AI slop." 1/?

Centrist Dems Pre and Post Election Read more cartoons! --> #PoliCartoon Support our cartoons! --> patreon.com/barry
TRANSCRIPT OF CARTOON

This cartoon has four regular panels, plus a tiny "kicker" panel under the bottom.

PANEL 1

A large caption says "PRE-ELECTION."

Two people, a casually dressed woman and a more business-dressed man, are talking in an office. The man makes a dismissive gesture.

WOMAN: Progressives have some ideas for this election...

MAN: Here's my idea. Step one: donate to our campaign. Step two: you get lost.

PANEL 2

The man pushes the woman out of the office.

WOMAN: Hey!

MAN: No insult, but you woke special interest social justice freaks repel normie voters. Leave us in charge of this election so we can win!

PANEL 3

The man sits behind his desk, looking very pleased.

MAN: Good riddance! Now we can run a winning campaign - a centrist campaign with a centrist candidate and centrist strategies!

PANEL 4

A large caption says "POST-ELECTION".

The same man and woman are in a hallway. She glares at him, while he yells at her, jumping with fury.

MAN: WE LOST AND IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!

KICKER PANEL

The man smiles as he talks to Barry the cartoonist.

MAN: Centrist Democrats can't fail! We can only be failed.

I was asked to give my thoughts on generative AI usage in games - here they are!
From the article:
"I think that until the bubble bursts, AI will be used by quite a few game companies, and perhaps even beyond the bubble," says Brandon Sheffield of Necrosoft Games, which released the RPG Demonschool last year. "Look, I am not a fool – I understand that AI has some uses. Primary among those being the devaluing of work, the cheapening of labour, the laying off of creatives, and the generation of busywork for humans to fix whatever AI generates."

"It's also useful for burning through water, raising the prices of RAM and chipsets globally, and poisoning anyone near the data centres that run them. So there are a lot of use cases for AI. From spurring on the death of the creative endeavour to dissolving our economy, AI is absolutely gangbusters at what it does. We don't use it in our studio though."
