My surprise with this is that this is possible at all considering it shouldn’t be possible for PR seats to jump ship. Turns out it’s permitted because Komeito didn’t run any candidates last election—if they had the rules against changing parties would apply.

Yes, but there’s no backlash in Japan (and admittedly not as much sycophancy) so I’m a bit skeptical of the materialist argument here

11. The issue with modern Star Trek is that it relies on the characters being moved by friendship and found family rather than duty to something bigger than themselves.

Also just another sign that Trump's affection for Abe does not really extend to anything practical. The US embrace of FOIP was taken up by the first Trump administration from Japan and was viewed as a milestone; just another thing to be cast off now. (Reposting bc I originally wrote "first Abe")

Takaichi has been a vocal proponent of amending the constitution to make free speech more conditional to the public welfare, using the rise of online defamation as justification. It feels like there should have been a way for her to spin this into a likely popular legislative response.

There's an AI angle to this as well, since the videos were AI generated. Feels like there's trepidation that if the *PM* can get away with what's been alleged it could open the floodgates.

I think it’s worth noting that the protest wave we’re seeing now is still mostly organized by and made up of those who have been protesting for decades. There was also an absolutely astonishing number of Kenshokai members handing out newspapers.

Constitutional revision was a wedge issue that the LDP could wield to divide the opposition. If that explains why they never went whole hog on revision then it follows that they would go ahead with it when it is no longer useful. With the CRA imploded that could very well be now.
