I'm taking a turn back into medievalism and society in my #imc2025 paper with @rluzmore.bsky.social this year. Part of the #landscapeconsortium sessions, we'll be talking about medieval landscapes today and the ideas-informed society in #s1737 on Thursday. #medievalsky @imc-leeds.bsky.social
A laptop screen with a ppt presentation called 'Timeless Terrains: Medieval and Modern Mental Landscapes Today' by Ruth Luzmore, University of Southampton, and Katherine Weikert, University of Winchester. At the bottom are the logos for both universities alongside that of the Institute for Applied Thought Leadership. The logo of the Landscape Consortium, with those words below a wandering pathway uphill through trees, with a tower and small gabled building on the horizon. All in brown on cream background.

Latest ITT statistics are somewhat positive, with most secondary subjects - especially shortage ones - recruiting better than last year. Primary down a smidge, English down due to bursary cut But majority still likely to be below target (this is last year's targets: new actuals out next month)

Logged myself sick today, but am spending the day (under blankets) doing what? Working... I seemingly cannot action what I would advise others to do. This is nothing to do with my employers and everything to do with me!

There's a huge unanswered Q about what's happened in school/society. "Pandemic" or "Gove" or "child poverty" are the common answers but none are entirely satisfactory.

You never really forget your first style guide. No matter how many years pass, its rules on caps will always seem natural to you and any deviation from them a kind of biblical perversion.

A key thing our new data dashboard highlights is the teacher supply plight of schools with the most pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. And the gaps have grown wider as the supply challenge has deepened. Read my colleague Michael Scott's blog on the key findings: www.nfer.ac.uk/blogs/nfer-d...

This post from a teacher at Apalachee High School. 😭 America isn't just failing students. It is failing teachers, too.
I lied to my kids today in second period. I told them it was just a drill. I told them to get behind my couches (thank GOD I ditched desks and have bulky furniture!) & be quiet - the more quiet we are the faster the drill will end. I knew it was a lie. I knew this was what I always plan my furniture arrangement for every year. My kids were able to just hide & not panic for over 10 minutes, until we heard the banging on doors, walkie talkies, & yelling in the hallway. Then I had to come clean. My kids
- & that's what they are. Not just students. They are MY KIDS- were so brave. They still trusted me & did exactly what l asked. I felt so helpless. 18 of my kids.
All I could do was ask them to listen to me & to hide. It was the worst 20 minutes of my career. 18 kids.
Depending on me. Anna somewhere in the building unable to get to me, or me to her. No idea what's going on. More yelling, banging on doors. Finally the door is opening & we're evacuated to the football field.

There’s a colloquial German word, verschlimmbessern, that describes attempting to improve something but only making it worse (for example, most Microsoft Word updates). So go ahead and add to your German vocabulary the term etwas verschlimmbessern, or “to worsebetter something”

Announcing end of one word Ofsted grading on the first day of term (which I do support) I totally get it the comms strategy side - back to school day and there's been a lot of misery announcements from them recently some positive/cheap press - but ouch from school leader perspective. #dusky #ofsted

Every end of August since I left teaching/headship I get a touch of the blues seeing all the back to school messages. I still get to be in schools and work with school leaders, but doesn't quite compare to those first days with colleagues, pupils & families. So much potential! Go get 'em! #edusky

Kid has an English assignment, where school has kids first submit essay to an "AI checker." Kid did not use AI. AI checker says the use of the word "devoid" magically turned essay into 18% AI written. Changing "devoid" makes it drop to 0%. We're spending time "un-AI-ing" an essay that has no AI.
