The belief that writing is solely a technology and not an epistemological act would be quaint if it didn’t persist so thoroughly.

This drives me to distraction. See it all the time. Don't want to dunk on anyone in particular. How can anyone work in a university that selects students almost entirely on A-Level grades (probably *excluding* Critical Thinking), and say they don't value what A-Level exams are testing. 🤷
Post clipped from bsky.social

But what is being tested? Those of us who have taught in UKHE understand the difference between being able to remember what’s on the syllabus and being able to make and sustain an argument based on critical thinking and evidence. The obsession with high-stakes accountability is part of the problem.

Summer is my least favourite season here in the S. of England. Hot and humid. Light starts to go in the evening. Stinky bins. Trees have lost their mojo. Birds cba singing. Flies. Garden goes over after being lovely in the Spring. Roll on mists and mellow fruitfulness.

This is available in English 👇 It's a commentary on a recent scoping review of studies on universal MH interventions in schools, looking at potential harms rather than benefits. References/links to systematic reviews looking at benefits are also available if you go to the published paper, though.

I worry about students who will start endlessly uploading prose to check it, which is of course already happening. Hard problem to solve but when "trying to score as human" overtakes "having something to say" we are not winning.

No. Good example of the root of all evil in UK politics atm. We want the government to pay for our care. We want the government to get someone else* to pay for it. *Someone we don't identify with.

I think you can see from the replies to this, that the problem isn't so much who is paying, but the worry caused by gaping holes in the system. If quality and continuity of care was good, I *think* most folk with parents in this situation would not begrudge it costing "their" inheritance.

Compare with NHS advice on vaccines 👇 So strange to see the US government losing its way so badly.
Vaccines do not:
do not overload or weaken the immune system – it's safe to give children and adults several vaccines at a time and this reduces the amount of injections needed
do not contain mercury (thiomersal)
do not contain any ingredients that cause harm – only ingredients essential to making them safer and more effective and only in very small amounts
do not cause autism – studies have found no evidence of a link between the MMR vaccine and autism

I think this is right, but also information about how we reach net zero has been very poor. Whether that's a communication failure or because it involves some very difficult choices is an importnat question but, regardless, if you leave that unclear you can't expect people to embrace change.

Oh no! Oh no!!
In most cases, the more covariates we have in the data, the higher the chances we catch all confounders. (Overfitting can be a risk in prediction problems, but in public health there are usually too few rather than too many covariates in the model.) This is why, in a world with a growing wealth of data, observational evidence treated with causal methods ends up winning.
