Russians dropped a glide bomb on elderly people who were waiting in line for their pensions. More than 20 dead. Please. Don’t look away and don’t be silent. This is all I could ask for

I really dislike how science has started calling almost any fancy computational technique AI. 🧪 The framing of this entire article makes it sound like a benevolent AI independently made these drugs. That is *pure fantasy*. Instead: a team of scientists made a machine learning model for a study.

Article on BBC news.
Title: AI designs antibiotics for gonorrhoea and MRSA superbugs
Description: Two new potential drugs have been designed by AI to kill drug-resistant bacteria, in a major Massachusetts Institute of Technology study.

Just had a fascinating conversation with a Korean reporter. The area that burned was intensively logged by the Japanese in the 30s and 40s. It has since regrown into dense even aged stands of conifers. Super dense stands that are impossible to walk through. There is no logging.

The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans
U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.

Never forget what russia has done to Mariupol. There can be no lasting peace in Europe without justice for this. It's either peace through strength and accountability, or more wars through appeasement and concessions. No third way.

I know I’m not a fancy political strategist but I’ve just got this slight feeling that “look at what hypocrites Republicans are on trade policy” might not be as effective a message to the average voter as “your kids might die because Donald Trump thinks it’s okay to feed cows chicken shit”

Honestly how can you go and post something profound about misinformation when you just confidently shared some information that was fundamentally wrong. It took less than 5 minutes to check. You're an actual journalist, what chance do the rest of us have? Do better

Ryan @rlr123.bsky.social · 28/01/2025
Those numbers are completely wrong though. They're based on the energy consumption of the user just opening the webpage and not running any prompts. Which are significantly more energy intensive than loading the webpage

Ryan @rlr123.bsky.social · 28/01/2025
That number is wrong. It references this - www.knownhost.com/blog/carbon-... Which uses this as a source www.websitecarbon.com/how-does-it-... These emissions are based on the users just loading the webpage. It doesn't take into account the actually energy intensive part, running the prompts.

Lovely example of how weird real-world data is. I put all 55 million points in Overture maps into a Nomic Atlas map. Lots of points spuriously appearing in the ocean. But the 1° square around 'null island' (0° lat, 0° long) is suspiciously clear -- someone has cleared out bad data just there.
