Just want to remind everyone that the Mayor cut 200 critical jobs which will result in significant service cuts at a time when Portlanders need govt the most, meanwhile he kept 70 vacancies in the police bureau even though per PPB's own staffing report they will NOT fill most of those positions. 🙃

Wanted to clip this bit from my last video: I want EVERYONE to consider running for some office somewhere, even and ESPECIALLY if you have never considered it. One way out of where we find ourselves is to have more people from more backgrounds, cultures, places, and perspectives representing us.

Morillo, Green, Kanal, and Dunphy join the conservatives in voting yes. The ordinance passes without the need for another tie-breaking vote by the Mayor.

@counciloravalos.bsky.social cites @councilorzimmerman.bsky.social's comment from an earlier day: if the OCPA's budget's underspend can be pilfered, then so too can the (wildly bloated) police budget.

Jacob Hoopes (they/he) @rjacobhoopes.carfree.life · 22/07/2026
@counciloravalos.bsky.social notes how (fucking) frustrating this process has been. The Mayor is known by all to have crafted a terrible budget. There has NOT been compromise by the conservatives. Before removing jobs, we need to know what those jobs do. This ordinance does not protect the OCPA.

@councilorgreen.bsky.social is disappointed in the Mayor's tie-break & (rightly) recognizes it as an abdication of responsibility. The Mayor and City Administrator should expect oversight. This is a reciprocal relationship. Portlanders want to see a LOT more oversight. Expect it. It's coming.

This is not the fiscally responsible ordinance. @councilorgreen.bsky.social goes through this lie claimed by the conservative councilors. The conservatives' ordinance is disappointing and disrespectful to the will of the voters. Legislative intent matters. The progressives cared & compromised.

Jacob Hoopes (they/he) @rjacobhoopes.carfree.life · 22/07/2026
@councilormorillo.bsky.social drives the point home. OCPA should not be put against workers. "Folks are willing to pay more, but they demand that the money will be used well." "Maybe you were a progressive in the 80s. Not anymore."

Jacob Hoopes (they/he) @rjacobhoopes.carfree.life · 22/07/2026
The conservative councilors demonstrate a profound disdain for compromise and good governance. Infuriating. @councilorkanal.bsky.social demonstrates an attitude of leadership and understanding that reaches across the aisle, despite the conservatives' reprehensible, irresponsible politicking.

Mayor Wilson Thanks City Council
For Passage of Seattle Transit Measure Renewal

“Right now, our transit system is breaking records and delivering real value for our families. I appreciate City Council’s partnership in crafting a package to voters offering a low-cost way to bring people more and better of the cheapest travel option available, public transit. It’s a package that respects people’s hard-earned dollars and brings 100,000 more bus trips to Seattle every year and funds 22,000 free transit passes for low-income households.

Next week, we will gather in City Hall so I can sign the bill and send it to voters for their consideration this November. To everyone who showed up and helped shape the Seattle Transit Measure – I also say thank you, and congratulations.”

It’s gonna be hot for the next few days. Putting out extra cold water, in one of the many free fridges across Multnomah County, is one of the best ways to help our neighbors who don’t have access to reliable electricity or refrigeration stay comfortable through the heat. Salty snacks, also helpful.

This is horrible - the 20% of Portlanders with the lowest income are not only deeply cost burdened, but are cost smothered. IN 2024, the MEDIAN rent was 100% of household income! This is so profoundly cruel and the situation needs to be addressed with the urgency it deserves.

Don't know why it took me this long to look for it. But yeah. Taylor Farms uses prison slave labor. www.prisonlegalnews.org/news/2023/ju...
Published by the Arizona Republic, the report counted 26 DCRR prisoners with detainers filed by federal Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The detainers render them ineligible for employment in the U.S. Moreover, a 2007 state law makes any potential employer criminally liable for failure to check their work eligibility. But the law exempts employers renting prisoner labor from DCRR or its for-profit subsidiary, Arizona Correctional Industries.

Many Arizona firms have taken advantage of this opportunity, including brands like Hickman’s Egg Farms, Taylor Farms, NatureSweet and Televerde. After hiring DCRR-supplied workers for as little as $4.75 an hour – one-third minimum wage – the firms claimed not to know whether any undocumented workers were among them. DCRR couldn’t say either, though it noted that 10,000 undocumented prisoners are currently working assignments inside state prisons where they are incarcerated.
