This feels like a horoscope or alignment chart for our councilors. What a funny (and perhaps telling) assessment of their engagement. www.oregonlive.com/politics/202...
Indeed, getting all dozen councilors to respond to a questionnaire on the Moda Center was a fraught endeavor.
The newsroom requested that each respond to the survey within five business days.

Four councilors - Mitch Green, Sameer Kanal, Angelita Morillo and Eric Zimmerman - answered all the questions, though Kanal only did so days after the deadline. Another four - Council President Jamie Dunphy, Council Vice President Olivia Clark and Councilors Elana Pirtle-Guiney and Dan Ryan - submitted their answers jointly while Councilor Loretta Smith returned a modified questionnaire that addressed five of the original eight questions.

Councilors Candace Avalos and Tiffany Koyama Lane, meanwhile, each emailed statements that touched on some - but not all - of the questions they received. Councilor Steve Novick declined to participate in the survey entirely.

With the data provided by @jcbradbury.com & @ripcitynotripoff.bsky.social, it's clear that the Blazers are not operating in the same world as the rest of us. Maybe they're still convinced that the mayor has this authority he simply doesn't have? Wilson is a bobble-head from a previous generation.
"The city's delay has given us time to study what a market deal is," the Blazers source said. "And let's just say the $600 million deal that was supposed to be done six months ago was a way-below-market deal."

The key quote from @councilorgreen.bsky.social. The state and county money can help Dundon et al THIS year. It's their call if they want to wait & lose access to that money. The cost for them only rises if they choose to continue slow-walking the city and the council. I don't get their strategy.
Right now, it's a matter of $120
million. Like, if Dundon came out today and said 'I'm gonna pick up the tab on the $120 [million] ... that would probably get us to the finish line tomorrow."

This is an EXCELLENT piece about getting our institutions to work better in every way. We should engage with governance with an open source ethos. This is democracy, this is socialism, this is the way forward. It's deeply related to the work being done already with ATProto & gov transparency.
An open source city might take a different approach: The neighbor sees a pothole and reports it in an app, which encourages them to add information such as photos. The app notices several other reports from the same intersection and shows photos, asking if it's the same issue. These reports are combined and posted in a public database, and a group of people that live in the neighborhood reviews it.
That group has been given control over the portion of the city budget for their street, and they decide how much they want to spend to fix it. They bundle it with other similar work and set a reasonable price to get the fix done. Once the price is set, notifications go to the neighbors that reported the issue, city crews, and local contractors that the work is ready to be done. Anyone who is able and ready can do the work. Once the work is done, a city inspector and a representative from the neighborhood group is notified to sign off that it was done safely and correctly. With their approval, the cost of doing the work gets paid out of the city budget. The reports, authorization, contract award, inspection results, approval, and payout are all public.
With the help of open finance platforms like OpenCollective, many large software projects are already funded in this way.We can build on our discussion of open data to imagine extending open source to finance.
First, all the money flows in the city would need to be part of an open data system.
Individual data might need to be hidden for privacy reasons, but data down to the neighborhood level should be available. Many cities provide detailed spending reports already, but this system would need to be built into how the city actually makes and takes payments. This would make paying your tax bills easier! This approach also works beyond a single project at the district and citywide level.
Master planning is always a huge project in itself, and cities struggle to engage citizens as much as necessary. The problem that they run into is they pay three times for it - once to gather ideas, again to figure out how to make them fit together, and again to actually put it into practice. Opening the planning process to ordinary people - not just in surveys and charrettes but on an ongoing basis - completely changes the process. This is where the value of the small scale open source projects in the city starts to compound. If citizens are already participating in day to day planning and operations in their neighborhoods, the city has all that open data and discussion to inform the big plan. The way things run now, the city has to go out and gather that information as a separate project every time it wants to update the master plan, which is why master plans tend to be obsolete as soon as they're published.
A living master plan sounds like an impossible dream for most cities, but software projects with far more complexity can't work without it.
As cities evolve to become even more complex, it won't be hard to imagine planning in this way - it will be hard to imagine planning in any other way.

The late night MAX shuffling around the Moda Center has thrown me for a loop. It feels like a society in distress - no rules, a culture of lawlessness. A blue MAX coming south on Interstate? Absurd and terrifying. One never thinks that such things could happen in their time. The night holds darkness

An answer for those frustrated with the Lloyd Center situation: Let's build Socialism.
"I think we're being asked to ensure that capitalism and capitalists provide a social benefit, and that's not realistic the way the law currently is," he said. "We can have nice things, including an ice rink, and Portland deserves them. But it's not going to be because large developers choose to build them altruistically, nor should it be. It's our responsibility to either build requirements, knowing what limitations that that might create, or better yet, provide a public service as the government."

A key detail that might get lost amidst the many individual violations of election law: It's unlikely that contesting individual violations could accurately demonstrate the SCALE and SYSTEMIC NATURE of the bad faith work done here by Safer Portland. It's an anti-truth campaign TO ITS CORE.
Kessler's complaint specifically asks the state not to prosecute or fine individual signature gatherers - but rather, the people who hired, trained and supervised them.

Novick gets the general logic right here imo. @councilorgreen.bsky.social is not only making the best economic decision, but also the best political one. Novick is making a bad decision, but at least he's being a lil thoughtful about it. Also, 300 folks is not nearly enough to get accurate polling
"Assuming we take the variations at face value"
Novick wrote to WW, "it will likely reinforce the positions Morillo, Koyama Lane, Zimmerman and Clark have already taken. For Green and me, if we were going to base our positions purely on electoral politics, it sets up an interesting question in the context of ranked choice voting-'are the people in the minority in my district the kind of people who might support me anyway, so taking the minority position in my district will actually help me solidify the 25% I need, or is there no correlation between my likely voters and positions on this issue, in which case taking the minority position is politically dumb?'I don't really know the answer for myself, so I think I'm stuck with just doing what I think makes sense on the merits and hope for the best."

Very curious what this supposed "new information" is. I'm doubtful that the conservative Councilors are operating in good faith. The Mayor's ability to break ties here is also front-of-mind. www.portlandmercury.com/news/police-...
As a basis for bringing the supplemental budget, councilors said new information since the budget was passed necessitated the changes. It is unclear what new information became available, and Clark and Novick's office did not answer the Mercury's questions asking what specific information came to light.Councilors may find themselves in a familiar position, as the two ordinances will compete for a seventh vote to pass. While the government charter does not allow the mayor to break a tie on budget amendments, Wilson could play the role of tiebreaker in this case because the shuffling is through an ordinance.
That means Wilson may cast a deciding vote to reallocate funds to jobs he first proposed cutting in his own budget.

@portlandmercury.com's @jeremiahhayden.bsky.social reveals a talent for food journalism in this piece about the Moda Center event with Tom Dundon on Wednesday. Lots to note in this article (see quoted post chain) but it's clear that the prospect of public funding becomes more toxic by the day.
City councilors were offered complimentary tickets to the event and encouraged by the Metro Chamber to attend, though state ethics rules could complicate things. According to the Oregon Government Ethics Commission, public officials aren't supposed to accept any gift with a value of $50 or more from a single source. Exemptions do exist under the law, including for elected officials attending chamber of commerce events in their official capacity. But that exemption does not apply when they are not officially representing the government."Everybody can characterize things however they want, Dundon said at Wednesday's event. "I don't see it the same way, but I'm not trying to get people to agree or disagree with me. I just know it feels like we're making a pretty big investment by staying here and paying these tax rates and agreeing to these fees for dollars that go back into the building."

Backing him up, Hoan said the main contribution Dundon is making is keeping the team here to provide investment opportunities and is indirectly paying for the capital stack through the activities generated in the building and surrounding area.

Dundon, clad in sweatpants, an athletic henley, and a baseball cap, appeared disinterested in the interview altogether. Still, Hoan offered grace and appreciation for investing in the team, and hopefully in the city.A rainbow of roses and emerald palms dotted marbled tables, black napkins, and minimalist decor ribboned around an array of charcuterie and fine cheeses stretching six feet wide. Garden crudité shooters with ranch and hummus were piled high like lofty dreams on a table beneath courtside seats. Soft lighting cast geometric shapes in motion, adding a subtle ambience to the catered offerings.

Friendly catering staff paced slowly amid the mingling crowd, offering bite-sized bulgogi steak tacos. The flank steak was presented on a fried wonton topped with pickled carrot, cabbage, and cilantro, while gochujang aioli gave a mild hint of spice. Burrata crostinis featured smashed peas with lemon and mint— a summery, fresh finger snack that creatively combined the culinary traditions of England and Italy. Tequila and charred lime prawn skewer topped with cilantro garlic tzatziki offered a peppy taste of the sea.

Oops lol I forgot alt text (The first page barely fits under the alt text limit! It would be interesting to learn if there was a character limit when creating each page.)
TOGETHER WE'RE CREATING THE PORTLAND WE DESERVE

Investing in Holistic, Preventative Community Safety
• I sponsored a resolution establishing Portland Street Response as a co-equal first response branch and creating a new Portland Street Response Committee to recenter community in planning the future of behavioral health response
• We said "no" to continued disinvestment in St. Johns and restored staffing for four firefighters for St. Johns' fire engine
• I successfully advocated to keep every community center open-including St. Johns and Charles Jordan, which were previously on the chopping block.
• I co-sponsored an ordinance formally establishing the Portland Committee on Community-Engaged Policing in City Code.
• proudly voted to confirm the inaugural members of the Community Board for Police Accountability.
• We invested in emergency preparedness by adding staff to the Bureau of Emergency Management, including a CEl Hub planner.

Advocating for Transportation Infrastructure & Housing Solutions
• I co-sponsored a resolution to study and begin development of social housing to build permanently affordable housing and address Portland's housing emergency.
• I testified at the State Legislature in support of North Portland emergency routes for Rep.
Nelson's bill funding a new bridge across the railroad cut at Columbia Bivd.

Standing Up for Human Rights & the Will of the Voters
• I stood firm against attempts to defund the Office of Community-Based Police Accountability in violation of the City Charter.
• We began to update the City's investment policy criteria, so that we won't invest in companies that enable or facilitate genocide, armed conflict, or human rights abuse
Pushing Back Against Federal Overreach
• We stood up for immigrant and refugee communities by enshrining Portland's Sanctuary City status in City Code.
•I protected Portlanders from law enforcement impostors by proposing the Right to Know Who's Policing You Ordinance, which passed in May.OUR WORK AHEAD

Infrastructure Improvements
Historically, the City hasn't been good at taking care of its things. We have an enormous maintenance backlog in our Parks & Recreation system and our City-owned infrastructure in general. I'll be looking to find affordable and sustainable ways to address the backlog and prioritize fixing what we already have over paying for something new we can't afford to maintain.

Codifying Portland Street Response
Portland Street Response is a pillar of our public safety system, providing critical behavioral health services and freeing up police resources to respond to calls that require an armed response. It's time to make this essential program part of our City Code to ensure its stability for years to come.

Protecting Portlanders from Chemical Weapons
Tear gas and other chemical munitions are a threat to public health, public safety, the environment, and the First Amendment. My office is working on legislation to limit the use of chemical weapons in Portland because if it's not allowed in international warfare, it shouldn't be allowed in our city.

Defending the Will of the Voters
I will always defend the will of the voters as shown through Charter reform and ballot measures.
This means fighting to protect the Portland Clean Energy Fund, the Community Board for Police Accountability, and all other voter-directed programs or policies from attempts to materially alter them or siphon their

Just got a mailer from my Councilor @councilorkanal.bsky.social here in D2 and WOW! This is excellent in many ways. Not only does this clearly highlight his MANY successes, it's also just a beautiful document. And he's not even up for reelection this year! This level of comms should be standard!

I succesfully used safari to get the logos of popfeed and tangled. (Although tangled's icon is strangely dark with my icon settings.)
Same image as above, except popfeed and tangled now have logos. Tangled's logo is very dark, strangely.

@currents.is @tangled.org @popfeed.social @openmkt.app @pds.ls I'm having trouble getting the icons for your apps to work. Gifthood and Leaflet were put on the home screen in the same roundabout way, but their icons appear! Any suggestions to fix this?

Yeah I'm certainly not opposed to bridges, just mainly the loud car-carrying ones. Remaking the debris of the horrifying mistakes of the past has resulted in some of the coolest and best urbanism. Look at the Cheonggyecheon Stream in Seoul, for example!

Up at Pittock Mansion and the view is making me fall in love with Portland all over again. If you have a nice camera, I would loooove to see photos from up here on this gloriously beautiful day.

Doing some reading (dn.org/understandin...) and it seems like it would be roughly $4,000 a year plus ~$0.20 per domain registered. This isn't as important as getting the physical/digital infrastructure online for general local internet sovereignty, but I think it should probably happen eventually.
Understanding ICANN's budget and fees is also important in the context of broader internet governance debates. As discussions about privacy, censorship, trademark protection, and decentralization intensify, stakeholders frequently scrutinize ICANN's expenditures, accountability mechanisms, and strategic goals. For domain name stakeholdersespecially registrars and large-scale investors-engagement in the budgetary process can influence how fees are used and ensure that ICANN's financial priorities remain focused on internet stability, security, and fairness. In conclusion, ICANN's fees and budgets are the financial scaffolding that supports the global domain name system. These mechanisms fund everything from root zone maintenance to international policy
coordination and abuse prevention. While individual domain name registrants might only encounter a small ICANN fee buried in a registrar invoice, that fee is part of a much larger financial ecosystem designed to sustain the decentralized, resilient, and interoperable nature of the internet. For anyone engaged in the domain name industry—whether as a business owner, registrar, investor, or policy advocate—understanding the purpose and impact of ICANN's financial structure is crucial to appreciating the infrastructure that enables the global domain economy to function securely and equitably.
