This morning my staff attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Ukandu Lofts in South Portland. Located just 12 minutes from both major children’s hospitals, this free, year-round resource center supports children and families affected by cancer.

Habitat for Humanity Portland turns 45 today — and they have a lot to celebrate: As the oldest affiliate on the West Coast and the largest in Oregon, they have built and repaired homes for 3,500+ people in the tri-county area. In this fiscal year, volunteers contributed a record number of hours.

This week Oregon Walks wrapped up their monthlong walking series, STEPtember, with the first-ever Portland Promenade! The 11-mile route hit all four City Council districts — from Luuwit View Park in East Portland to Pioneer Courthouse Square downtown — with entertainers and speakers along the way.

Today Sellwood Community House celebrated the reactivation of Laurelhurst Studio! Through a long-term lease with Portland Parks, Sellwood Community House invested private funds and in-kind support to restore the century-old studio, assume operations, and maintain the space for community use.

Today the City of Portland recognizes as Dolly Parton Day by mayoral proclamation. September 25 is 9/25, making it the perfect day to honor the singer/songwriter who gave the world “9 to 5,” which has endured for nearly half a century as an anthem for the working women’s movement.

Last week our office went on a walking tour with the Architectural Heritage Center of the Halprin Open Space Sequence, a famous series of modernist plazas designed in the 1960s as abstracted representations of the nearby Cascade Range and Columbia River.

This month I visited the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at PSU with a tour provided by Maryanna Ramirez. The exhibits were amazing, including nearly four decades of prints by British-Indian sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor — who’s best known for creating “The Bean” in Chicago’s Millennium Park.

This week I met with Isa Peña and Heather Stuart of Innovation Law Lab, an organization of lawyers and activists working to advance immigrant and refugee justice. They oversee the Universal Legal Representation program, which has enrolled 26,000 Oregonians to receive free legal services.

Last night I attended Marshall Park Neighborhood Association’s annual ice cream social in the park that bears its name. This stunning natural area includes a 400-foot-wide canyon formed by Tryon Creek, which runs through it, and a waterfall framed by rock boulders.

Last weekend my staff joined Councilor Zimmerman to celebrate Forest Park Neighborhood Association’s 50th anniversary at Skyline Tavern. This unique neighborhood, at the edge of one of the nation’s largest urban forests, is part of a wildlife corridor that connects into Oregon’s Coast Range.

Great news: After a yearlong delay, the Washington Park Reservoir plaza and upper reflecting pool are officially opening to the public today! In 2021 the Portland Water Bureau replaced its original 1894 reservoirs with a 12.4 million-gallon, seismically reinforced underground reservoir.
