Just want to remind everyone that the Mayor cut 200 critical jobs which will result in significant service cuts at a time when Portlanders need govt the most, meanwhile he kept 70 vacancies in the police bureau even though per PPB's own staffing report they will NOT fill most of those positions. 🙃

Mayor Wilson Thanks City Council
For Passage of Seattle Transit Measure Renewal

“Right now, our transit system is breaking records and delivering real value for our families. I appreciate City Council’s partnership in crafting a package to voters offering a low-cost way to bring people more and better of the cheapest travel option available, public transit. It’s a package that respects people’s hard-earned dollars and brings 100,000 more bus trips to Seattle every year and funds 22,000 free transit passes for low-income households.

Next week, we will gather in City Hall so I can sign the bill and send it to voters for their consideration this November. To everyone who showed up and helped shape the Seattle Transit Measure – I also say thank you, and congratulations.”

It’s gonna be hot for the next few days. Putting out extra cold water, in one of the many free fridges across Multnomah County, is one of the best ways to help our neighbors who don’t have access to reliable electricity or refrigeration stay comfortable through the heat. Salty snacks, also helpful.

This is horrible - the 20% of Portlanders with the lowest income are not only deeply cost burdened, but are cost smothered. IN 2024, the MEDIAN rent was 100% of household income! This is so profoundly cruel and the situation needs to be addressed with the urgency it deserves.

Don't know why it took me this long to look for it. But yeah. Taylor Farms uses prison slave labor. www.prisonlegalnews.org/news/2023/ju...
Published by the Arizona Republic, the report counted 26 DCRR prisoners with detainers filed by federal Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The detainers render them ineligible for employment in the U.S. Moreover, a 2007 state law makes any potential employer criminally liable for failure to check their work eligibility. But the law exempts employers renting prisoner labor from DCRR or its for-profit subsidiary, Arizona Correctional Industries.

Many Arizona firms have taken advantage of this opportunity, including brands like Hickman’s Egg Farms, Taylor Farms, NatureSweet and Televerde. After hiring DCRR-supplied workers for as little as $4.75 an hour – one-third minimum wage – the firms claimed not to know whether any undocumented workers were among them. DCRR couldn’t say either, though it noted that 10,000 undocumented prisoners are currently working assignments inside state prisons where they are incarcerated.

This feels like a horoscope or alignment chart for our councilors. What a funny (and perhaps telling) assessment of their engagement. www.oregonlive.com/politics/202...
Indeed, getting all dozen councilors to respond to a questionnaire on the Moda Center was a fraught endeavor.
The newsroom requested that each respond to the survey within five business days.

Four councilors - Mitch Green, Sameer Kanal, Angelita Morillo and Eric Zimmerman - answered all the questions, though Kanal only did so days after the deadline. Another four - Council President Jamie Dunphy, Council Vice President Olivia Clark and Councilors Elana Pirtle-Guiney and Dan Ryan - submitted their answers jointly while Councilor Loretta Smith returned a modified questionnaire that addressed five of the original eight questions.

Councilors Candace Avalos and Tiffany Koyama Lane, meanwhile, each emailed statements that touched on some - but not all - of the questions they received. Councilor Steve Novick declined to participate in the survey entirely.

This Spanish city has been restricting cars for 24 years. Here's what we can learn from it
Pontevedra, Spain, offers some of the best evidence available about what happens when a city is reconfigured to accommodate people, rather than cars.

Since “defunding the pillars of society in order to save money” and “giving all the money to police and wealthy pricks” are core tenets of conservatism, I think as a society we ought to consider “conservative” a dangerous indecent thing to be, and those who identify as such should pay a social cost.

The key quote from @councilorgreen.bsky.social. The state and county money can help Dundon et al THIS year. It's their call if they want to wait & lose access to that money. The cost for them only rises if they choose to continue slow-walking the city and the council. I don't get their strategy.
Right now, it's a matter of $120
million. Like, if Dundon came out today and said 'I'm gonna pick up the tab on the $120 [million] ... that would probably get us to the finish line tomorrow."
