How about some optimism for the weekend? @nvogtvincent.co.uk has a new paper, and I think the title makes the point: Global Coral Reef Collapse is not Inevitable. 🧪🌊 Link: linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pi…
Coral reef tipping points and adaptation: (A) Schematic of a tipping system, applied to a coral reef. The system, represented by a ball, begins in a stable state with high coral cover (top panel). Under rapid forcing such as temperature-induced mortality, the system is pushed to an unstable state with intermediate coral cover (middle panel). If the system passes this ‘tipping point’, decline becomes self-perpetuating and the system transitions to a new stable state with low coral cover (bottom panel). Since this new state is stable, coral cover does not increase even when the forcing is removed, and much stronger forcing is required to transition back to the original stable state with high coral cover. Note that ecological forcing may also shift the stability landscape or its underlying shape (not shown here). (B) System response (colours, perhaps representing coral cover) to forcing (grey, perhaps representing temperature). A tipping system (dashed line) responds abruptly and nonlinearly to forcing. A system without tipping (solid line) responds more smoothly to forcing and can recover once forcing is weakened. (C) Coral adaptive responses to rapid warming. Accumulated thermal stress is proportional to the time integral of the difference between temperature (illustrated here by smoothed annual maxima) and coral thermal tolerance. Stress is reduced if adaptation is possible - whether due to evolution, gene regulation, changes in symbiont community composition or, at a reef level, coral community composition - limiting mortality.

I assumed it was metals since my colleagues study that. But yes pyrolysis will break down PFAS so long as you reach 800-900C, using slow pyrolysis. And I agree the metals might be unavailable. Ran out of time typing before. (Still wouldn't trust it without more testing, especially for filtration).
020
Rivka Fidel, PhD @rivkafidel.bsky.social · 26/04/2026
...I haven't studied use of plants for organic contaminant remediation but pyrolysis will break down many of them. Mind, you have to pyrolyze at 800-900C to break down PFAS.

Rivka Fidel, PhD @rivkafidel.bsky.social · 24/04/2026
PS No you couldn't use phytoremediation plants to make a biochar for filtering water because the risk of heavy metals contaminating the water would be too high. It would likely not meet federal safety standards.
210
Rivka Fidel, PhD @rivkafidel.bsky.social · 24/04/2026
Thankfully biochar renders most of these metals relatively unavailable to plants. So if you had to use such a metal-rich biochar I would dilute it with biochar made from uncontaminated feedstocks before applying it to soil. 2/2
010
Rivka Fidel, PhD @rivkafidel.bsky.social · 24/04/2026
You can make biochar with phytoremediation plants but they'll have high concentrations of whatever metals the plants were remediating. You would have to apply it to soil at very low rates, depending on the metal toxicity, concentration, and soil type. 1/2
