The NIH is proposing not to release scores following merit reviews. This will decrease transparency, support further politicization of funding decisions, and obviate the hard work and expertise of the peer reviewers. Public comments are open at this RFI link until October 13. Please share widely.

For folks asking why bother commenting because the OMB won't care: comments help build cases for the courts by explicitly laying out harms. That's why it's really important to have your comments be as specific as possible. Also, contact your senators and reps! They actually do care about this.

In a cluster-randomized trial involving patients having major noncardiac surgery, tranexamic acid reduced the need for red-cell transfusion during hospitalization and was noninferior to placebo for venous thromboembolism within 90 days. Full TRACTION trial results: nej.md/4e8QKF4
This image is from a Research Summary published in the New England Journal of Medicine about a study on tranexamic acid in major noncardiac surgery. It includes a diagram of a blood bag labeled "Red-cell transfusion" and graphics of syringes labeled "Tranexamic Acid" and "Placebo" with participant numbers: N = 4156 and N = 4117 respectively. It also lists patient details: 8273 adults, median age 64 years, with 53% women and 47% men. There is a prompt at the bottom to read the full Research Summary at NEJM.org.

Additionally, OMB proposes a new provision that agencies may consider an applican't affiliations with organizations engaged in activities that violate Federal Law, undermine public safety or natl security, or advocate for the overthrow of the US govt.

Science is for everyone! You don't have to be an expert; don't worry about finding the right words. Just speak from the heart. And if you feel despair, remember why we fight. The trees, the birds, the axolotls, the musk ox, the air and the water; they don't get a say. So we have to speak for them.

Write an op ed urging your Congresspeople to stand up for public science and oppose the OMB's proposed rule changes. An effective letter might cite the ways publicly funded research has benefitted your community; your state university news page can tell you what they've been up to if you're stuck.
