Quince season! Most people eat this stuff as membrillo, but I haven’t perfected that yet, and the family likes it better as sauce or fruit leather anyway

Middle grade book rec: Mary Averling! Especially good for spooky season — she’s great at inventing cryptids and putting intrepid, imperfect kids into perilous adventures. I’m reading The Burn Beast now and love it just as much as The Curse of Eelgrass Bog. (The Ghosts of Bitterfly Bay is next!)

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, working at a desk. A brain next to her says, "We need to take breaks!"
The second panel zooms in on Sarah's face. She is annoyed. She says, "What if I don't listen to you?"
The third panel shows the brain smiling.
The fourth panel shows the brain reaching towards a lever. The brain says, "I'LL MAKE YOU."

Private prisons are bad, but they’re a small part of the system. Mass incarceration is driven by public policy & spending — choices made by your elected officials.
Pie chart showing that less than 9% of confined people are held in private prisons: 13,000 held for local jail systems, 6,000 held for youth systems, 43,000 held of ICE & Office of Refugee Resettlement, 33,000 held for BoP & USMS, and 75,000 held for state prison systems.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a horseshoe crab watches as a variety of prehistoric creatures swim towards an ethereal light. An ammonite calls back to the crab, “come on, horseshoe crab! We’re all evolving!” Panel 2: the horseshoe crab stays in position and replies, “nahh that’s crazy” Panel 3: the horseshoe crab is superimposed in front of a future premonition: a rather miserable-looking human slouched in the glow of a desktop computer. The horshoe crab swims away and says, “good luck tho”

I’m currently working my first ever union job, & have gotten higher pay raises in this job than in any other in my 25+ year career. When employers say they reward hard work & excellence with higher pay, that, in my experience, is bullshit; it takes a union to advocate for workers. Happy Labor Day
