Quince season! Most people eat this stuff as membrillo, but I haven’t perfected that yet, and the family likes it better as sauce or fruit leather anyway

Things feel grim, so here’s a very large, thousand-year-old tree with me standing next to it for scale
A huge, somewhat scraggly, thousand-year-old Sitka Spruce, in bright sunshine against a blue sky, with an adult human standing at the roots for scale. “The tree is the World’s Largest Spruce with a circumference of 58 feet, 11 inches, diameter of 18 feet, 9 inches and 191 feet tall for a total of 922 AFA points.”

I’ve been reading After Jesus Before Christianity by Erin Vearncombe, Brandon Scott, and Hal Taussig, and those early students of Jesus understood what they were doing very differently than later Christians, and even from one another. But they pretty much all hated the Roman Empire.

CoreCivic, the company running these detention centers, has had a very good year so far; too bad they are profiting off human misery. The two peaks in the box at the right of the chart are November 2024 and March 2025. Source: ir.corecivic.com/stock-inform...

Hands Off rally/march in PDX had a huge turnout today, with a strong feeling of camaraderie and support for one another. We were walking the middle of the pack, and people were still spilling out of the plaza onto the street when we turned onto Morrison Bridge.

Currently reading On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century, Graphic Edition, written by Timothy Snyder and illustrated by Nora Krug. It reads like an illustrated manuscript, which I guess it literally is, and Krug’s art helps make the text more meditative, something to linger over.
