Australia and Türkiye rely on coal, gas, & oil to generate respectively around 90% & 80% of their domestic energy needs. Australia is also the world’s third-largest fossil fuels exporter. Given such dependencies, how will the #COP31 presidencies tackle the fossil fuel question?

At COP30, there was a push for a "fossil fuel roadmap" to enable a transition. The flood in Nepal is also set to add momentum to calls for mitigation & loss & damage finance. But the #COP31 presidencies neither list fossil fuels as a priority agenda nor loss & damage www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/ene...

Some amount of fossil fuels will remain for a while, no? I doubt any modeller would confidently project "phaseout", as it is commonly understood. But the trajectory of coal is quite clear. With all the electrification in transport, we might see oil also pushed out

Only time will tell, I guess. Both Qs -- whether China will indeed import the stated quantities from the US and whether China's coal consumption will peak or plateau -- are open. I'm quite confident about long-term decline though. Innovation in the energy sector right now is high and coal is v v old

China imports some coal anyway. But of all the things the US could seek in bilateral negotiations at this moment, making coal a priority is... stupid. No amount of US government support can indefinitely sustain an industry whose long-term decline is well underway. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
