Historians rightly say people's actions should be judged by the standards of their time. But what often gets lost is that those standards weren't what we think. Many 18thc Europeans hated colonialism--as an e.g., here's Immanuel Kant in 1795 castigating it as "truly appalling." It was contentious...
"Excerpt from Kant: "If one compares this with the inhospitable conduct of the civilized—and primarily commercial—states of our own continent, the injustice they display when visiting foreign lands and peoples (which they equate with conquering them) is truly appalling. To them, upon their discovery, America, the lands of the Negroes, the Spice Islands, the Cape, and so forth, were territories belonging to no one; for they counted the inhabitants as nothing. In the East Indies (Hindustan), under the pretext of merely establishing trading posts, they introduced foreign military forces—bringing with them the oppression of the natives, the incitement of the region's various states into widespread wars, famine, insurrection, treachery, and the whole litany of evils that afflict the human race.

China and Japan (Nippon)—having had experience with such guests—wisely restricted access: the former permitted entry but not full admission, while the latter granted even that limited access to only a single European nation, the Dutch, whom they nonetheless kept isolated from the native population, much like prisoners."

Panel 3, C&H look at an image in an open book. Calvin: "A painting of a comic strip panel. Sophisticated irony. Philosophically challenging. ...'high' art."

Panel 4, C&H on the floor with paper and crayons. Hobbes: "Suppose I draw a cartoon of a painting of a comic strip?" Calvin: "Sophomoric. Intellectually sterile. ...'low' art."

RIP to the incomparable Sam Neill
How long has it been since you've seen the original "Jurassic Park"?

SAM NEILL The last time I watched it in its totality was sitting beside Princess Di at Leicester Square at the London opening.
On the other side of me was my son Tim - he was 11 and completely swept away by it, but about the time the T-Rex turns up, Tim started to fart. And the draft was drifting across me to royalty! I spent the whole film in a muck sweat, thinking, "Princess Di is being exposed to the horrors of a little boy's fart, but she's going to think it's me. I am going to be subliminally blamed for my son's crimes, and I don't think she'll talk to me afterwards." But she was well brought up and never mentioned it.
JEFF GOLDBLUM I love that story, Sam.
I've heard him tell that a couple of times, and it's just amazing the lengths that he will go to still blame the boy.

A heatwave cartoon for @newscientist.com
1. Title: The North Wind and the Sun quarrelled as to who was the stronger.

2. The Sun says: "I propose a wager: See yonder traveller, let us see who can make him remove his cloak."

3. The northwind blows on the traveller, the sun says: "You blow yet he only wraps it tighter!"

4. The sun shines on the traveller, saying: Observe! . The traveller mutters "nice and warm"

5. The Sun says "See, my kindness brought results!" The traveller has removed hos cloak and begins to sweat. "Fair enough, you win." concedes the North Wind.

6. "Tremble before my gracious heat!" says the sun, smiling bradly. His heat has started a fire. the traveller flees. The North Wind says "I think that’s enough."

7. "Let the world burn with my cleansing benevolence!!" blazes the sun madly, now grown huge in the sky. The land is a burning fireball. "Now you’re scaring me!" says the North Wind anxiously.
