Comfy?

Original Art

Art by Ted Key

Key's sarcastic housemaid-character, Hazel Burke, catches the family's cat in a compromising situation. Hazel was a transmedia sensation before there was such a word as transmedia -- gracing The Saturday Evening Post since the 1940s, expanding into a syndicated comics panel from King Features, and landing a hit television show. The present selection has the appearance of a Post gag, inasmuch as it lacks a King Features copyright notice. Ink and painted white retouching on Bristol board.

"Sorry But That's Not Allowed In This Theatre"

1 Panel Gag Cartoon

Original Art

Art by Ray McGill

McCormick Publ. (1929)

McGill pits an obnoxious movie-theatre usher against an amorous couple -- getting on their case for doing just what the characters on the picture-show screen are doing. Nice job of hypocrisy-busting from a versatile cartoonist who later assisted Chic Young on Blondie and then developed Peggy Wow (1936-37), a Blondie-type feature with a Hollywood setting.
