The right wing crash out over asian students celebrating at a UT football game reveals that all along the true goal of reactionary colorblindness was never “meritocracy” but resegregation. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
Color-blind meritocracy was, for many years, a successful rhetorical strategy for undermining antidiscrimination law and excluding Black people from selective schools and prominent positions. That’s why so many former segregationists seemed to suddenly embrace the concept in the 1970s. For them, resegregation—not color-blindness—was always the goal. As long as the success of some immigrants could be used to paint Black students as undeserving, color-blind meritocracy was good. But now many on the right see a new problem: too many Asian Americans in elite spaces. Their success, therefore, must be portrayed as a sinister theft of real (white) Americans’ birthright.

The declining “social trust” that the administration warned against is, of course, not the fault of these students. The problem is bigots like Bo French who cannot accept into their community people who do not share their race and religion, and those who monetize or otherwise profit from that bigotry by spreading it through social media. Like the proverbial child who kills their parents and asks for mercy as an orphan, they are responsible for the problem they are decrying.

Haha. Well some people, esp. guitarists, still use amps with old-fashioned tubes. Mullard tubes have a cachet, particularly the older ones (NOS= 'new old stock' or unused vintage tubes). Mullards aren't made in UK anymore: now they come from Russia. Also in US it's "tubes." In UK it's "valves."

there are plenty of worthwhile things to push Democrats to be better on but "do not try to raise more money to take advantage of a generational opportunity to pick up seats in dark red districts" is a braindead hill to die on. you will not be successful & will hurt your credibility in better fights.

Ok I read this and I know I am sort of in the Well He Would Say That Wouldn't He category, but I agree with Pat Savage here that this report was *remarkably* bad. Like actually to the point that at times its hard to work out what the complaint is or how one is meant to infer anything from it.

just to emphasize what's happening here: BMW (a company that used slave labor under the Nazis) refused to provide an official vehicle to the ultra right-wing AfD party, which is now asking Elon Musk to provide a Tesla instead Tesla literally becoming the Nazi car brand

The ABC News story is back up, and it includes a large correction/editor's note at the very top. On top of that, Nathan Lee's byline has been removed and replaced by a generic "ABC NEWS" one. abcnews.com/US/new-shipy...
Editor’s Note: CORRECTION: A version of this story published on Oct. 7 contained errors in the description of certain company investments, government contracts and event chronologies. After subsequent reporting, this version contains corrected information and additional context regarding some of those investments, contracts and events.

President Donald Trump and defense contractor Anduril Industries earlier this week announced a $6.6 billion investment to create a state-of-the-art shipyard in Maryland to manufacture components for Virginia-class submarines.

While the project was welcomed by many, it comes amid concerns raised by Congressional Democrats about defense companies that have received investments from a venture capital firm where Donald Trump Jr. is a partner.

Two observations: (1) there’s no way Russia adheres to this deal, and when they can’t, they’ll blame Ukraine, and (2) while this is a lot of diesel, it’s less than a week of the diesel the US consumes. This is about 900m gallons; US consumes about 60B/y.
