I was a bit puzzled by this as well. Don's guess about the path seems nuts but is more plausible than any of the alternatives. I suppose it's possible that, if they weren't so MAGA-fied to have believe this at face value immediately themselves, they hoped that Smith would be too baffled to respond.

46 years ago today, Stevie Wonder released Hotter Than July. The album peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, topped the R&B Albums chart, went Platinum, and produced “Master Blaster (Jammin’),” a No. 1 R&B hit. “Happy Birthday” became central to Stevie’s campaign for an MLK national holiday.

Can’t my “cultural cachet” actually be built on the fact that I would never write something as subliterate as “reticent to declare”?

From Rolling Stone article about choosin Texas:

That lack of monoculture is part of the reason why some were reticent to declare “Choosin’ Texas” the song of the summer when it was clear there was no viable competition (in chart terms, at least). We’re all living different summers at parallel times, with social media feeding back to us only what we want to hear and see. If you care to live in a silo, rent is free.

At this point, though, if someone contends they’ve never even heard of “Choosin’ Texas” or Langley, it may say more about the listener than the song. Or, for that matter, what they want to project to the world. With incessant news coverage alongside chart and playlist presence, it’s pretty difficult to still claim total ignorance on this one. Perhaps there is a deeper reason why people say they haven’t heard the song and feel the need to make it known: cultural cachet.

Letter from guy I won't identify (but he did sign the letter, so you can find it):

"I am a card-carrying liberal and a Democrat. And yet, as I often do, I find myself agreeing with Bret Stephens, in this case with his column about Pulitzer Prizes and National Book Awards.

I read fiction extensively and have also had two novels published. It has not escaped my notice, nor that of my writing friends, that stories with an exotic structure or those with graphic violence or sex win a disproportionate share of these awards. In fact, those kinds of works are perfectly valid. But so are good old-fashioned stories, which seem to have been lost in the rush to embrace the different and esoteric."

Nikkei keeping it classy by focusing on how, now that there doesn't seem to be a brutal invasion and termination of virtually all political rights in the offing, Greenland's sweet, sweet rare earth elements are going to be right there for the drilling for America's allies, like Japan.

Basically, it would have been bad if there had been a war that broke up NATO, but the important thing now is to make sure these Greenland rare earths underground be made available to allies like NATO and Japan and denied to China.
