Preview of my upcoming FREE/PWYW #Realis Faction zine, I present to you; The Board 🎲 Hoping to publish sometime this week! 🤞 #TTRPG 🎨: courtesy of the Kattapulka Patreon @pbbeta.bsky.social & @garin.bsky.social

Preview image of my upcoming PWYW Realis Faction zine. There is art by Kattapulka of a wealthy science-fantast figure wearing a cloak with fur shoulders, wide-brim hat decorated with triangles, holding a cane. Text reads:

"The Board

Corporatists, criminals, two sides of the same coin.

All takeovers are, by definition, hostile. Those who cannot be bought or bribed can be bullied, and those who cannot be bullied can be broken. The game is played one move at a time, and its best players are in a class all their own.

The Market is a predator, and all other social interactions its prey. It assumes, consumes, & subsumes until all that is left are an invisible hand, and the pocket it picks."

Awesome idea! That whole thing was kind of surreal. I was outside in one of the smoking areas when everyone's phones went off all at once. A buddy of mine who had a booth in the vendor hall got a text from his team that said "Come back NOW Dorothy, we're not going to Oz to find you."

Large language models are not reasoning machines. They’re plausibility engines. It’s not just that they don’t test their outputs to make sure they’re correct or logical, or that they fail to do so in certain instances. They can’t, and they’ll never be able to on their own. They can only assess which answers are probable, based on the data on which the models have been trained. And that holds true whether they’re trained on the full breadth of human output or only on peer-reviewed scientific articles. It’s baked into the way they operate.

Here's Etsy's response to our complaint about sellers who are using Michael's name and work via GAI for commercial profit on their platform. There is no way to report this on their DMCA portal, so they suggest we negotiate with the grifters. Seriously? 🤦😮‍💨

Thanks for reaching out with your concerns about potential infringement.

Etsy’s Intellectual Property Policy addresses how we handle infringement claims. Since Etsy is a venue, I can’t offer legal advice about what you should do, what rights you have, or whether or not something’s infringing. Allegations of infringement can be serious legal matters, so you may want to speak to an attorney if you have any questions.

You can try contacting the seller directly through Etsy Messages to try to work this out amicably.

To report infringement, you can use our Etsy Reporting Portal.

If you are having trouble determining which property type is appropriate for your intellectual property, this article may help; claims regarding the image, name or likeness of an individual may be considered a right of publicity infringement and can be submitted under "Other."

Additionally, this article provides a walkthrough of how to use the Portal, along with a step by step video, which you might find helpful: How to Report Intellectual Property Infringement

Please let me know if you have any questions about our policies.

I represent the intellectual property rights of artist Michael Whelan, a prominent book cover illustrator and fine artist.

Michael’s name is being used to advertise AI generated products on your platform. These product images were created using his name to prompt technology that used his art without permission for training. You’ll find this to be particularly problematic because Michael is a leading figure in the debate surrounding generative AI (see the New York Times feature story in which he featured prominently:

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/04/books/booksupdate/ai-books-illustration.html)

Our experiences dealing with copyright complaints with Etsy have generally been quick and painless, however, that changed recently due to Etsy’s misguided policy on generative AI.

There is currently no way to report violations like this through your DMCA form. I’ve tried to report from the product page but have received no response. I would appreciate your assistance addressing this concern as it affects your entire community of creators.

These are the products that are using Michael’s name that need to be taken down:

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.
