OK, it's time: my official stance on AI:
Screenshot: Q: Do you think AI will take my job?
A: It depends, but there are certainly some jobs that will be safe from AI. For example, if your job is traveling back in time to assassinate a waitress before she gives birth to John Connor, it’s hard to imagine a robot doing that job successfully.

Anthropic coined a new research term: "self healing studies."
Historically, it was hard to adapt research studies after they launch. The researcher writes the study guide, the interviews run, and if users raise something new along the way, it has to wait for the next study.
In a "self healing study", there is a continuous feedback loop between interviews and the study guide. Each round of interviews identifies new topics, they are added to the guide, and the next interviews explore them.
Nothing waits for a follow-up study - the guide keeps evolving with the study.
And the researcher sits above all of it as the guardrails.
The study proposes additional topics, and the researcher uses their judgment to decide which ones deserve exploring.
The term comes from Jane Justice Leibrock's team at Anthropic, from their churn interviews on Claude Code.
Before we even had an MCP, Anthropic built its own plugin to run Listen studies because they wanted them running around the clock.
That's the future of research.

I'd like to be a person who can think and reason like the smartest folk I know one day. I think that's part of a noble use of a life. And I'd hate for their valour and the valour of thinking generally to be so debased that we're no longer able to recognise the value of good, sharp thinking. 9/9

I would fucking *die* of shame if I couldn't understand or speak to the ideas in text that carries my name. And insofar as academia is still unavoidably a dialogic occupation, that's the long-run outcome of this pretending. 7/9

The stolen valour of the AI author, though, is ultimately just like other forms of stolen valour insofar as it can't be sustained over time, in person. ICA this year saw exactly this. At least one presenter of an AI generated deck humiliated by question after question they couldn't answer. 6/9

If my anger - and it *is* anger - feels naive, it's only because in many universities the idea of seeking knowledge as virtuous has been under attack for so long that it's the neoliberal water we now swim in. 5/9

To have someone come along and 'coauthor with Claude', then claim to be an academic of that same kind is genuinely offensive. It belittles what it means to pursue a life of the mind and reveals an inability to understand that there's more to the university than extruding crass 'outputs'. 4/9

A major reason I find AI use so offensive is that it amounts to a kind of stolen valour. I and so many others have devoted large chunks of our lives to what is - in its non-cynical moments - a virtuous occupation focused on trying to read, reflect and understand really complex phenomena. 2/9

This has been a rough week for AI submissions at the journal, but it's also led to some reflection around why I seem to react so strongly to academics using AI to write their papers and make up references for them. 1/9

Here’s what I’m observing in AI papers: Title and abstract: these set the scene in academic jargon overdrive. You’ve never seen so much over-use of the word “epistemic”. AI-enhanced papers start jargon-heavy and keep at it, exhaustingly, all the way to just within the journal word limit. 2/

It will never stop being funny to me that the street fighter subreddit has a much better, well reasoned ai policy vis a vis literally all universities.
Hi, thanks for posting! We do appreciate you thinking of us even though we have to moderate.

Our stance on all AI generated content (Images, Video, Voiceovers, and whatever else LLM based AI gets up to in the future):

At best, they are approximations of street fighter characters as the AI has no clue what it is trying to create. Because of this, there is no street fighter content so they are not allowed. (rule 1)

Also, they aren't allowed per our source rule. As AI sources cannot be tracked, we must assume that they use uncredited sources in the learning data. (rule 5)

Finally, AI images, video, text, and voiceovers are barely any different than posting a screenshot of a google search. The level of effort is so low that we consider it spam (rule 3).

Because of these reasons, AI art and other AI content is not allowed.

If you would like to contact the moderators about this removal, you can do so here.

The thing about research which AI will never do, can't do, and wouldn't do a good job of even if it could do it, is that reading your citations can let you discover something that one person said sixty years ago that nobody ever picked up on, but that is revelatory, even sublime.
