Newsletter editor for Quarz going to have a rough morning....
Screengrab from the Quartz email newsletter which appears to have hoovered up some AI commentary in its body text, which reads:

"The source material for this item contains only a headline and no substantive article content. Two separate news lines are referenced — Mattel's former CEO being named to lead Skydance, and President Trump drawing backlash for comments suggesting Iran could 'take out' Los Angeles — but neither story is developed with facts, figures, or sourced detail sufficient to produce accurate newsletter copy. Including either story without the underlying reporting would require fabricating material, which falls outside editorial standards. This item will be held until full source material is available."

New Pub! A chapter in volume 1 of "Navigating Trauma in African Journalism", thanks to the kind invitation and tireless editing of Kealeboga Aiseng and Chikezie E. Uzuegbunam.
An abstract of a chapter, saying: "Since the Vietnam War, moral injury has been recognised as a form of psychopathology with symptoms substantially similar to post-traumatic stress disorder. Yet unlike post-traumatic stress disorder, the causes of moral injury are essentially moral rather than fear-based: rooted in taking—or failing to take—actions that an individual believes to be fundamentally morally important. This chapter argues that forms of journalism with an especially strong moral orientation, such as investigative and conflict reporting, are likely to be especially predisposed to the kinds of perceived moral failures that might cause moral injury. Moreover, trying to understand the connection between certain forms of journalism and moral injury directs us to see journalism as an unavoidably moral practice in which journalists find themselves taking on obligations to sources, audiences, and the subjects of their stories in ways that may be hard to fulfil."

Pencil sketch from a photo I took in Sumy the day after Russia's Easter Sunday attack. For someone who has generally preferred photography, sketching has been a helpful way to work through what was a confusing set of days. #urbansketch

I arrived almost a week ago exactly in South Africa for what will be a year-long fellowship (thank you British Academy) based at the South African Institute of International Relations at Wits.
An image of the great hall of the University of the Witwatersrand. It is a large building with a central entrance fronted by eight enormous columns, with wings on the left and right. The image is taken from across a large open plaza and the sky above is clear.

Absolutely fucking awful. I stayed maybe a block from this building when I was in Sumy, and just out of frame was this mural. Russia can do its worst. It will never subdue Ukraine.

Screen grab of a journal article titled "Defining terrorism: Is one man's terrorist another man's freedom fighter." It has been accepted at a Routledge journal. Its abstract reads: Most researchers tend to believe that an objective and internationally accepted definition of terrorism can
never be agreed upon; after all, they say, ‘one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.’ The question
of who is a terrorist, according to this school of thought, depends entirely on the subjective outlook of the
definer. This article argues that an objective definition of terrorism is not only possible; it is also indispensable
to any serious attempt to combat terrorism. A correct and objective definition of terrorism can be based upon
accepted international laws and principles regarding what behaviors are permitted in conventional wars
between nations. This normative principle relating to a state of war between two countries can be extended
without difficulty to a conflict between a nongovernmental organization and a state. This extended version
would thus differentiate between guerrilla warfare and terrorism. The aims of terrorism and guerrilla warfare
may well be identical; but they are distinguished from each other by the targets of their operations. The
guerrilla fighter’s targets are military ones, while the terrorist deliberately targets civilians. By this definition,
a terrorist organization can no longer claim to be ‘freedom fighters’ because they are fighting for national
liberation. Even if its declared ultimate goals are legitimate, an organization that deliberately targets civilians
is a terrorist organization.

Liga Ozolina looks at journalism's work to maintain coherence as a field and acceptance of its normative mission.
Headshot of Liga Ozolina and an abstract that begins: Vitality and the future of journalism have been a core discussion in professional forums as well as in academia for the past few decades. Mostly, because journalists and news organizations (in Latvia and elsewhere) are confronted with ongoing unprecedented and multi-faceted crises. In this constantly changing and evolving media landscape, exploring how journalists and their audiences understand professional journalism and see its role(s) in society is paramount.

Marilia Gehrke argues that journalist-elite relationships are untenably dysfunctional and need to change.
Headshot of Marilia Gehrke with an abstract that begins: Influential scholarship has demonstrated that, despite mutual benefits, political and intellectual elites often make the news and use reporters to deliver information subsidies to influence policymaking. Ephemeral dynamics in newsmaking incentivize the repetition of an endless cycle: those often heard as sources will receive space repeatedly. Conversely, and at most, ‘ordinary citizens’ will be called to share their life stories, delivering entertainment rather than information. In this theoretical paper, I aim to demonstrate that the established dynamics between reporters and elite sources are neither sufficient nor proper to cover emergent and critical social issues nowadays.

@seldridge.com explores how thinking in terms of 'dependency' unsettles various assumptions in the field.
Headshot of Scott Eldridge with an abstract that begins: When considering journalism’s interdependencies, one might take a moment to reflect on the dependencies that have come to define journalism’s late-postmodern period. Interdependency suggests mutuality. Dependency, is more ‘taking’ than giving, with an etymology of hanging and weight (de), drawing and stretching on that which it hangs (pend). So what is journalism weighing on? What is it dependent on?

Sandra will be offering new theorising of journalism's (dys)functional relationships.
Headshot of Sandra Banjac with an abstract that begins: Fellow journalists, editors, sources, audiences, and other extra-institutional actors, each with varied involvement, have a role and interest in co-shaping journalism. In light of digital and economic forces prompting journalism to evolve, however, it has become more important to evaluate the nature or ‘health’ of these relationships.

For my paper, I'm offering the provocation that journ. studies as a field is reaching the end of its useful life.
Picture of Richard Stupart with the talk abstract, saying Journalism is one set of answers to questions around the division of epistemic labour. In abstract terms, it is an answer to social epistemological challenges: an arrangement through which communities are in a relationship with agents who know the world for them and inform them of things that are of value to that community (value being varied: moral value, utility value, etc). Most accounts of journalism have an assumption of this kind underlying them, yet tend to confuse the institutional forms that this social-epistemic relationship takes (e.g. the classic newsroom) with the relationship itself. Using news reporting of the War in Ukraine as an example, I argue that professional journalism is an increasingly marginal element of how the work of knowing distant realities gets done - a view which poses difficult questions for the field of journalism studies.
