There will be plenty of hot takes, my sole observation at this stage is that Burnham's biggest obstacle at the next election might not directly be Reform or the Tories, but the exhausted, cynical, risk/change averse British public.

This much for academia being somehow above or outside the war: this is the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and these are our colleagues, engaged in the same work we do. This is also late punishment for the instrumental role the Academy played in the late 1980s in the struggle for independence.

This is like when the besieging forces set fire to the #library and #archives building in #Sarajevo (the Vijecnica, also called the City Hall) in August 1992. It's barbarism. This is an attack on #culture, #heritage, science and knowledge. #Academia #Kyiv #Ukraine

One reason to learn about things outside your major is so that you have something to talk about with people at parties and on dates. No amount of money will make up for you being a crushing bore. History majors learn this early but I guess it takes other people longer.

Manchester City cheated and should be punished. But the rules they broke are ridiculous and should be scrapped. Let owners spend their own money! Football shouldn't turn away donors. Just turn away bad actors and sportswashers. Me @financialtimes.com - free to read as.ft.com/r/754ae74e-e...

On Guinness West Indies Porter. Proper drink, man. The kind of drink Sam Pepys - before he joined Funkadelic - would have glugged at 5 of the clock in a morning before delousing himself & his mistress & scuttling to Chatham to make a cut on the profits of some mast timber from Sherwood forest.

The quality of broadcast media coverage of politics & interviewing has long been in decline & is part of the problem of how politics is done. Laura Kuenssberg thinking it appropriate to call the UK PM "Santa Burnham" is tabloidesque, soundbite & vacuous politics. Not what the #BBC should be about.

Most of these 24 languages don't need much celebration, they are in a stable and dominant position in their respective societies, with few exceptions (e.g. Irish). It's the non-official, minoritised, marginalised languages - and their speakers! - that deserve attention. And not just once a year.

This is a poor take that suggests Owen Jones doesn't know much about Russia in the 1990s, including Russia-US or wider Russia-West relations in the 1990s. By giving only one part of the story, he is repeating the Russian political elite's self-serving line that it was all the West's fault. Long 🧵
