In #MathsToday yr 10 did area of parallelograms and triangles. I started with a diagram with a "trap" side and made the first step to explicitly identify and discard the trap side. Significantly reduced issues of multiplying wrong numbers because they had it as part of the process.

Among more recent books, Starter Villain is the one that really popped; it's got a great cover and crossover appeal. Yesterday we looked at algebraic function machines. Year 7 enjoyed making the inputs and outputs with the real tiles and asked me if they could use them again in the next lesson. I also enjoyed using my new pen tool of course! #MathsToday

Looking at the volume and surface area of cones with Y11 in #MathsToday. I scribbled a dodgy version of this task on the board when a few pupils were getting confused with the difference between the height and slope of a cone. I've neatened it up here now.

The task asks pupils to decide which cone is easiest to find the volume of and which would be easiest to find the surface area of.

In #MathsToday yr 10 got to grips with % of an amount without a calculator. Weirdly, doing it calculator first and then non calc actually seemed to help their fluency. I think it helped them get a sense of what the answer might be so they had more confidence with their numeracy.
