I have a stitch and bitch on Google meet now and I've just discovered all the effects. My friends have not joined the call yet. Excited for their reactions to cat with human mouth.

Still feeling nervous energy after department review day. It was very helpful and pointed out how strong we've become and also areas that I'd become blind to that we need to work on. My, it was nerve wracking though.

In #MathsToday yr 10 did area of parallelograms and triangles. I started with a diagram with a "trap" side and made the first step to explicitly identify and discard the trap side. Significantly reduced issues of multiplying wrong numbers because they had it as part of the process.

My new retort to kids saying "why should I learn how to code this when AI could do it for me?" Well _I_ could code it for you, what would be the point of that? Your mum could code it. The point is for YOU to learn something new.

In #MathsToday yr 10 learned about finding 5% of amounts. Slowly slowly. Their weak numeracy makes it harder but we are getting there. One student can half things really well now, thanks to the springboard 7 materials so I need to use them more!

Big thanks to mathsbot as the star of yesterday's open evening with Find the Prime. We got the head teacher to set a score and then invited children to beat it. Very busy night as children refused to leave, wanting one more try to see if they could beat him.

Working with a trainee psychology teacher and horrified to find the resources she was left, that have been in use for 5+ yrs are basically just "copy loads of text for 40 minutes then do an exam question" Helped her fix them Friday and she says today's lesson actually worked with her class.

In #MathsToday #ALevelMaths I'm trialling a new HW approach with yr 12. HW is to be prepared to get 100% knowledge on a 15 minute test of the week's content. They do it, peer mark with exam mark schemes. I check and set detentions/interventions for those that do not get that point.

As I'm updating my notes so they're all on Notion (easily sortable into groups and viewable on phone), I find that past me just ignored the methods of each paper I read, so I have to partially re-read each one. EdD is sometimes a journey of screaming "WHY" at past me.

In #MathsToday yr 10 got to grips with % of an amount without a calculator. Weirdly, doing it calculator first and then non calc actually seemed to help their fluency. I think it helped them get a sense of what the answer might be so they had more confidence with their numeracy.

In #MathsToday I did regions and inequalities with yr 11. I spent a lot of time making them focus on drawing the lines and reminding them that the region is the last step so don't worry about it until you get there. Moderate success. Also set Seneca HW for them for the first time today.

In #MathsToday I did % change with yr 10 and wondered why we call it reverse percentages and teach it as a topic but other inverses don't get that treatment. No "Reverse Area" or anything. I had 5/10 students in so we had a great time, got loads done.

In #MathsToday, Year 10 did some some variation-inspired expanding and factorising of single brackets (Task 1 in interwovenmaths.com/quadratics) before moving on to some algebraic fractions, ending with a classic 'A Day in the Life' resolution question.
Worksheet titled “Task 1: Expanding and Factorising Single Brackets”, containing questions a–z in two tables. Each row gives either a factorised or expanded algebraic expression, with a blank space for students to complete the equivalent form; expressions increase in complexity from simple linear terms to multivariable polynomials. An algebraic fractions question that cancels out to 1.

In #MathsToday, Year 10 did some some Interwoven Related Calculations and then started on my all-new Algebra Fluency page - answering 1000+ questions between them! interwovenmaths.com/algebra It also gave me lots of data to know where to focus lessons in the Algebra topic we're about to start.
A maths worksheet titled “Task 1.3.3 Adjusted Multiplications”. It begins with “Given that 32 × 45 = 1440” and presents six questions using this fact: calculate 1/32 + 1/45; solve 32x = 1440; find the area of a 32 m by 45 m rectangle; find 32% of £45; share £1440 in the ratio 44:1; and expand 32(45x − 1).

A second section headed “Hence…” gives six related questions with adjusted values: calculate 1/16 + 1/45; solve 32x = 1472; find the area of a 32 m by 4.5 m rectangle; find 33% of £45; share £1395 in the ratio 44:1; and expand 31(45x − 1).A screenshot of https://interwovenmaths.com/algebra question

TGT is back. The kids are probably not back (though 5% are according to @teachertapp.bsky.social). But 1st September seems the right place to start and you could always show it at INSET instead. Discuss Danny Leon's amazing Eclipse Shot. bit.ly/TutorGroupThink
Tuesday 1st September
This stunning shot is of Spanish Olympic skateboarder Danny León taken during the total solar eclipse experienced by parts of Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and Spain on 12th August this summer.
Danny and his team spent months planning the shot, choosing a ridge on farmland near Novales, 50 km northeast of Zaragoza where they could sent up a ramp at the right angle for the eclipse to be right behind.
Danny’s videographers and photographer José Ángel Izquierdo (Jai Cano) were set up around 500 meters away, which was key to the shot. They used a powerful telephoto lens, which makes distant objects appear close together so that Danny’s silhouette seems very close to the annulus (ring of fire) which appears during a total eclipse (Youtube video of the tick).
The day before they set up the ramp, practiced the trick and the shot and then hoped for perfect weather. At the moment of eclipse, Danny had just 30 seconds to do the trick and get it right on cue. A fairly simple trick for an Olympic skateboarder, but there’s no second chance*. No next Olympics in 4 years time.
Did you see the eclipse (the UK had around 90% of the sun obscured)
If you had to get a simple skateboard trick right on cue - could you handle the pressure?
Is this an achievement of sport, science or creativity? Is it art?

* there is another total eclipse next summer (2nd August) across southern Spain, but the sun will be much higher in the sky.
Tuesday 1st September
Did you see this stunning photo of skateboarder Danny León taken during the total solar eclipse last month?
It was months in the planning and required a powerful telephoto lens to take the photo from distance. Danny needed to get the trick right too as he only had around 30 seconds to perform on cue.
Watch: Video of trick

Did you see the eclipse?
If you had to get a simple skateboard trick right on cue - could you handle the pressure?
Is this an achievement of sport, science or creativity? Is it art?
