It's amazing to see people now just buying cheap hardware off AliExpress and turning it into 10x the value by building better firmware with Opus 5.5. For example, this 60$ synth now has firmware options that add lots of new features or even turn it into a Groovebox.

I am chagrined to admit that I'm missing Opus 5 Claudish. I guess the obvious seams were load bearing for me.

this 9,076 character regex matches all 4,030 4 letter words in the Scrabble dictionary - and nothing else. Those words would add up to 16,120 characters total.

I wrote about the thing I underestimated most about progress in AI: its ability to self-organize to accomplish tasks. Also, what that means for agents like Muse and Dots, along with a music video explaining why we keep relearning The Bitter Lesson. open.substack.com/pub/oneusefu...

My favorite slide of @simonwillison.net's talk. But I will punch up his follow on statement to the middle block of text : that's the crux of what software engineering has always been about.

The junk problem is an illusion, most of the programs written before AI are terrible crap. Now it is much simpler to write much better code. The crap produced will appear particular subpar since it can re-done better faster, and will be more isolated and forgotten.

for some, this is a worthy trade-off. for a craftsperson, this is borderline stupefying. i've found sticking to a human-in-the-loop while working with agents offers the opportunity to participate in this process. and keep the quality bar high, both in the product and architecturally.

My brother turned 45 today. I was trying to think of what advice I have for 45, and the only advice I really have is that the elapsed time between 45 and 50 is measured in weeks if not days.

this will perhaps poke everyone possible, but maybe the answer is that juniors just do senior stuff straight out of school either: - the same tool in two hands will produce different levels of output, in which case that's just 'being a junior' again - the same tool results in similar work: fine?

The key skills people are going to need to use LLMs effectively are around evaluation and verification. I think many people see that as "Oh, so I have to be the LLM's copy editor now" but this is because most people don't understand evaluation and verification in any systemic way.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that I "love" it ("enjoy" would be more fitting), but AI coding does pretty much validate every belief I've had about code, engineering, and the people and culture involved for the past couple of decades, and that is pretty awesome, even if some of it is a bit painful.

IMO, software devs have long had a cultural undercurrent of self-perception as *artisans* doing highly-detailed small batch or bespoke work, which is both wrong as a matter of primary economic context and sets up the adherents for a bad mismatch with AI's utility for software engineering.

Git Archaeology and Project History tasks are a fantastic thing to hand off to LLM harnesses. Dev who hasn't worked on this specific app for years was sure they had added support for XYZ. Claude produced a detailed summary of when XYZ was added and later removed, with commit SHAs and context.

Even before the agentic revolution, prompting tricks stopped being very valuable, as our research has shown. The format isn't key, the best approach to AI right now is to clearly specify your goals, your output, what "good" & bad look like, how to test the results... (yes, this is just management)

LLMs are not speed booster for (serious) coding. They are quality booster if used correctly. LLMs also allow fast prototyping, but that is a completely different story. Relevant in this context -> simonwillison.net/2026/May/31/... @simonwillison.net has a positive take on this.

Few are brave enough to acknowledge the truth.
A drawing titled "Wild Rabbit vs. Easter Bunny". On the left, there's a wild cottontail bunny sitting down looking alert. On the right, there's a cartoonish Easter Bunny wearing a little polkadot vest and standing next to some colorful eggs. The wild bunny is labeled "Eyes on the sides of the head to watch for predators." and the Easter Bunny "Forward-facing eyes to hunt for meat." Wild bunny: "Active all year." Easter Bunny: "Only active in Spring - otherwise in diapause as a cyst?" Wild bunny: "Walks on four legs." Easter Bunny: "Unusual bipedal stance." Wild bunny: "Plain brown and white fur." Easter Bunny: "Distinctive vest-like markings." Wild bunny: "Gives birth to live young." Easter Bunny: "Steals and redistributes eggs; parasitic reproductive strategy?"
