Pretty interesting situation, no different than Meta banning third party clients for their own apps. But in this case, part of Amazon’s lock-in is customer laziness (why trust multiple sites when I can trust one). Agents can shop anywhere and cheaply check references.

OpenAI is equivalent or substantially better (usually the latter) at every price point. Open models providers are generally competitive with OpenAI except at the very high end for significantly cheaper than that. (I maintain polytoken.dev as an LLM harness, so I use everything except Anthropic)

I suspect the API pricing is basically at-cost or small margin business for most providers (it’s highly competitive) and the flat rate subscriptions are usually loss generating. There are tools which calculate what your API rates would be (tailscale aperture does this team wide).
