I can no longer recall how I found out about David Stirrup's Indigenous Studies reading group during the pandemic, but the Center for Indigenous and Settler Colonial Studies quite literally changed the landscape of literary studies for me in the past 5 years. Please give this a listen!

Reading is dead but on this Long Island Rail Road train I'm reading Doireann ní Gríofa, Ray has Kafka open next to me, the woman in front has the New Yorker, the fella across the aisle is midway through Brothers Karamazov and his pal by the window has preserved their privacy by choosing a kindle

It turns out PEN America was extraordinarily sloppy in their reporting, writing tendentiously on behalf of Israel. Anyway, it was intense, and I'm proud of what we accomplished, and I hope you'll read it and listen to the podcast. jewishcurrents.org/what-pen-ame...

I can’t emphasize this enough — “AI” wasn’t born corrupt and toxic. For ~75 years, it was mathematicians and scientists doing interesting, thoughtful work and trying to solve problems, making only the usual human mistakes. What “AI” did to machine learning is as tragic as what it did to artists.

Problems I had with Chronovisor: . The way Beatrice holds her wine glass would leave her with bad company and warmed white . Wearing a bangle on one's right hand as a right handed writer is hard! Though cinematic . Restored videotape wouldn't run easily but maybe it's Yale Club tape player magic

Montaigne's cross-Channel heirs, the one who deserves the last word is an Anglo-Irishman: Laurence Sterne, eighteenth-century author of Iristram Sbandy. His great novel , if it can be so classified, IS an exaggerated Montaignesque ramble, contaınıng several explicit nods to Its French predecessor, and filled with games, paradoxes, , and aigressions D

Neighborhood Modernisms Modernism/modernity Print Plus Cluster Pitch Anushka Sen, Loyola University Chicago (asen2@luc.edu)
Ria Banerjee, CUNY Guttman Community College and the Graduate Center sbanerjee@gc.cuny.edu)

Modernist studies today is no longer enamored of the Euro-American metropolis. The field engages with the suburbs. with rural or exurban places tethered unevenly by twentieth-century networks of transportation, and with locations in global south or indigenous spaces that dislodge the center-periphery dynamic bequeathed by colonialism. This revision has not fully reckoned with the concept of the neighborhood -not the domestic interior but an adiacent and related site of residential life, patchily contained within the anonymous urban sprawl so precisely described by cultural and sociological thinkers since Georg Simmel and Walter Beniamin. If we look beyond studies of literary networks in iconic neighborhoods such as Bloomsbury and Harlem, what can we as modernist critics do with the intermediate concept of the neighborhood as a frame for organizing capital, affect, utopic or paranoid fantasies and more in the "modern" city?

Apropos: At the doctor's this morning, my usually calm doc suddenly squealed aloud because she got a text that someone bit her kid at camp. "There's blood" she said and showed me a photo of the back of her child's neck. "Human spit is the worst for cuts. Better to get dog spit on you."

Essential reading. Many things to say, one of which is that @theatlantic.com and @chronicle.com might consider doing some very basic fact-checking in future before gleefully and self-servingly packaging unsubstantiated, bad, and in fact harmful takes by TAH as searing truth-telling.

It (nearly) lives! Forthcoming from OUP in November or December! My first reaction, for once, was glee — though the terror of writing a book is that it’s never finished. Eek! Woohoo! Wild to have proofs in hand!!!!
Title page of forthcoming book by me, titled Nineteenth-Century Poetry and Cosmologies of the Human: Worlds Unmanned. From Oxford UP.Table of contents for forthcoming book.

Introduction: Poetry, Person, Planet — with subsections on William Wordsworth; Sylvia Wynter and lyricization; climate, affectability, impress; and criticism, canonicity, and counterbumanism.

First chapter on Wordsworth, Charles Lyell, and c19 manscapes — with subsections on Wordsworth’s and Lyell’s lyric theologies, the pathetic fallacy (Ruskin) and Wynter on desperate realization, and apostrophizing Toussaint Louverture.

Second chapter on Tennyson’s In Memoriam, the possibilities and limits of posthumanism, and ambivalent reading — with subsections on extinction and apostrophe.

Third chapter on Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the problem of reference, and infrastructures of reading — with subsections on Swedenborgianism, sphericity, plantation inheritances, and the slippages of rhyme.

Fourth chapter on Phillis Wheatley, extractivism, extractionist reading, and salvage criticism—with subsections on solar intergumanism, allusion, reticence, and refusal.

Coda on contemporary representations of climate collapse, Wynter on transumption, and the afterlives of c19 aesthetic imaginaries.
