'Ô muse, dis moi l' homme aux mille tours' is the first line of the first translation of the Odyssey by a woman, Anne Dacier in 1716. She had previously translated the Iliad in 1699. And she got involved in a controversy, much like the current Nolan vs Wilson one #QuerelleD'Homer

There probably was someone called Emily Wilson who wrote a critical review of Nolan’s Odyssey, but most of what we now think of as “Wilson’s review’ is probably the result of codifying a long tradition of anonymous Bluesky posting.

R&R process in ten easy steps: 1) these comments are perfectly reasonable and helpful 2) the reviewer hates me and all the nice things they say are code for 'go away and never write again' 3) I don't think I can do this. I'm not qualified. I'm never going to get it right.

Has anyone compiled material from the Sons of Africa? I've spent ages tracking one letter, in a journal called Diary: woodfall's register, 25 avril 1788, 2. It seems to be available at the BL, but also it apparently started in 1789. ???? Going a little crazy. #18thcentury #abolition

Open Access Book on Julia Wedgewood, by Alison Stone.
New open access book by Alison Stone on Julia Wedgewood:  Julia Wedgwood (1833–1913) was a major intellectual presence in the Victorian period, yet her philosophical work has long remained overlooked. This book offers the first sustained study of her philosophy, recovering a distinctive and original framework centred on what she called the ‘law of imperfect antithesis’. Drawing on both published texts and newly attributed anonymous essays, it reconstructs the unity of her thought across ethics, metaphysics, religion, and history.

Just saw a Thomas Mann quote on fb: 'a writer is a person for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.' And I hate it. Why should the fact that I find writing easier than any other mode of being make me not a writer? I suppose he'd say it makes me a hack. Arsehole.

Currently revising a paper, and I keep wanting to add sentences like 'It was hot, on the day that Wilberforce brought the petitions to Parliament'. Or 'Elizabeth Anderson argues that, despite the extreme heat, the movement was a success'.

Just had this thought. We, feminist philosophers, are a bit like bulls in a china shop. We say forceful things in a fragile (intellectual) environment. That's what philosophers do. But more often than not, if you're a woman philosopher, there's no one to pick up after you, or to pay for damages.
