I meant to post my weekly playlist earlier today because I wanted to shout out @mikeduquette.bsky.social for his writing on the latest Prince debacle for The Second Disc. That inspired the 3 hours of Prince box set highlights that has a bit of a weird title. figgsrock2.substack.com/p/prince-tra...

By the time this merger ruins HBO, destroys WB, gets 5,000 people fired, moves production overseas, and guts the quality of the movies the new studio makes, most people will have forgotten how fast the AGs caved and how little they got in this deal. Writers will not.

a take I saw that rang true for me today is that the GOP, which spends the other 364 days of the year talking shit about NY (and they did this back then, too, lest they peddle some "we loved it then" story), wants, once a year, to front like they love New York. Nah man. Everybody already heard you

We've got a Muslim man running the most multicultural city in the world and making space for all the people in it. That's what cultural victory over fundamentalism looks like, it's a shame that there's a part of the population that couldn't identify a cultural victory if it slapped them in the face.

The worst part of all this is Hancil Rincon was making his major league debut when Eddings humiliated him for no reason. Waited his whole life for that moment and can never get it back. MLB needs to suspend Eddings. Baseball is a game that is supposed to be joyful, not Pete Hegseth’x military.

Surely it can’t get more embarrassing, you think. Wrong, posts estate co-executor Londell McMillan, on his Instagram account “makemillions_mcmillan”
Instagram story from Londell McMillan (@makemillions_mcmillan) sharing a post from @nomusicnoparty, which reads, in the same design scheme as the new Prince album:

“Prince: TIMELESS - The New Album

THE NEW PRINCE ALBUM IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN ALL THE PRINCE HATERS
MADE IT OUT TO BE BEFORE THEY EVEN HEARD IT.

SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO LET THE MUSIC SPEAK FOR ITSELF.”

Incidentally, the post is synced to a clip of “Calabama,” the song with posthumous horn overdubs.

So the horns on one of the tracks from Prince’s new “album” of outtakes have been confirmed by one of the players as recent additions. So when the estate says they’re “learning” from the Michael Jackson estate, that begs the question: learning WHAT, exactly?
Facebook post from former NPG horn player Greg Boyer sharing Prince’s “Calabama,” a track on the new posthumous collection TIMELESSComments on said post:

Marco Cafagno
@Greg Boyer horns recorded in 2003, as on liner notes? So before Musicology?

Greg Boyer
@Marco Cafagno recorded a couple of months ago in my basement studio. I haven't read the liner notes

Marco Cafagno
@Greg Boyer so, this is a posthumous addition to the song. Liner notes say yourself, Adrian Crutchfield and Lynn Grissett. Song recorded in January 2003

Jonathan Craig Walmsley
@Greg Boyer Horns were added to this track that weren't on the original recording?

Update your priors, when you see "Johns Hopkins" you shouldn't think "good school" or "medical research," you should think "hedge fund that lives off taxpayer money and drops its claimed standards to collaborate with fascists" because that's what the school decided to make itself.

Not going to weigh in too deeply on MLB's latest proposal. I just want to restate the point that the "exciting" free-agent periods of the NBA and NFL are because the players are fighting each other for a limited pile of money. It's just another anti-labor effect of a cap system and house unions.

Dude, X-Files had 24-25 episodes come out each season, reasonably high production values, and they didn't take a 2-3 year gap each season. Pretty cool that execs used to order ahead based on the strength of their conviction instead of waiting to see how people responded to reach release.
