@remylevin.bsky.social & @danielavidart.bsky.social combine American panel and survey data to show that labour markets that prime-aged men experienced while growing up shaped their willingness to work decades later. cepr.org/voxeu/column... #EconSky
The figure plot the cohort decomposition of male labour force participation and lifetime labour market experiences.

Labour force participation among prime-aged American men has fallen for over half a century, and standard explanations leave much of the decline unaccounted for. This column combines panel and survey data to show that the labour markets these men experienced while growing up shaped their willingness to work decades later. These effects survive childhood moves across states and likely operate through men’s beliefs about whether work will pay off. If temporary downturns in labour demand can persistently influence labour supply, anchoring expectations about employment, not just inflation, may have a place in macroeconomic policy.

The biggest analytical weakness of Americans in trying to understand the current moment is that their powers of analogy begin and end with US history. The idea that something qualitatively different might be arising simply doesn’t occur to them.

We usually rely on GDP, trade, or wages to study the past. This amazing paper flips the script. It analyzes 630,000 paintings (1400-2000) to extract emotions and shows how art tracks living standards, wars, inequality, and even climate shocks. (How is this economics? Everything is economics!)

About this Florida vaccine story: When they were little - 1 yr and 3 1/2 - my two older boys, who’d had all their shots, got whooping cough. We asked their pediatrician what would’ve happened if they hadn’t been vaccinated. “Oh, they’d have died.”

Essay which clearly outlines the scientific and ethical problems with selecting embryos for polygenic traits. Scientists associating themselves with embryo selection companies, and those who’ve previously defended sociogenomics but are staying silent on these companies, come in for criticism here
Imagine a world in which a very effective polygenic score for depression is developed, and it really takes off. Everyone starts reproducing that way, and selecting embryos to try to protect their kids from depression.
What would happen? We have no effing idea what would happen. That means embryo selection companies face a dilemma: they can rely on the fact that polygenic scores for behavior don't work well enough to make a difference one way or another, or they are conducting unregulated experiments on human babies, never mind the human genome at large.

I think this is naive. Human curiosity isn’t going away, but science requires real resources. The US is the world’s largest economy, and US scientific output dwarfs that of any other country. A major contraction in US science means a major contraction in global science.

Statement from the largest economics association about the BLS firing As context: AEA approximately never makes such public statements This is a big deal

AMERICAN ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION
Committee on Economic Statistics and Committee on Government Relations

Statement from the American Economic Association on the
Dismissal of the BLS Commissioner

Leaders of the American Economic Association express their grave concern over the dismissal of the Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) earlier today.
The independence of the federal statistical agencies is essential to the proper functioning of a modern economy. Accurate, timely, and impartial statistics are the foundation upon which households, businesses, and policymakers make critical decisions. Undermining the independence or credibility of these agencies threatens the integrity of the information that markets, institutions, and the public rely on every day.
Measuring the vast and dynamic U.S. economy in real time is inherently challenging. It is standard practice for statistical estimates to be revised as more complete and higher-quality data become available. These revisions reflect the commitment of statistical agencies to accuracy, transparency, and methodological rigor-not failure or bias.
The BLS has long had a well-deserved reputation for professional excellence and nonpartisan integrity.
Safeguarding this tradition is vital for the continued health of the U.S. economy and public trust in our institutions.
We call upon elected officials to respect and preserve the independence of the nation's statistical infrastructure.

I love this imagery: seeing Buddha meditating under a tree and about to achieve enlightenment Mara's army attacks. But such is the power of peaceful calm around Gautama that as arrows and spears approach they transform into flowers, and fall gently to the ground around Buddha. I reflect on it often.
A richly detailed Tibetan Buddhist thangka painting depicting the scene of Siddhartha Gautama's enlightenment. The Buddha sits serenely in meditation on a lotus pedestal beneath the Bodhi tree, encircled by an aura. Surrounding him are armies of demonic figures sent by Mara, shown charging with weapons, fierce expressions, and dramatic gestures, yet their attacks dissolve before reaching him. Above, deities and celestial beings emerge from clouds, sending beams of light toward the Buddha, symbolising divine support. The backdrop includes stylised mountains and swirling clouds, enhancing the cosmic and spiritual atmosphere of the moment.
