(1) Continue to speak up about the value of science and U.S. government funding in science — e.g. about how investments in science drive technological innovation, lead to treatments and cures for diseases, etc. Speaking up can take a lot of forms. Every conversation matters.

🚨 Practical URGENT tip for NSF grantees: Out of an abundance of caution, I would right now go into Research.gov and… 1. Download your NSF award letters. 2. Print PDF your annual reports. 3. Screenshot the status table for annual reports. NSF is planning maintenance tomorrow to Research.gov
Due to maintenance, Research.gov (including access to NSF-PAR, GRFP, PES, and ETAP) will be unavailable from Fri., 4/25 at 10:00 PM ET to Sat., 4/26 at 1:00 PM ET. NSF apologizes for any inconvenience.

I called this "Cinderella at the grocery store" to students-- i.e., probably at some point in the whole stepmother-fairy godmother-ball-shoe-prince business, Cinderella went to the grocery store and brushed her teeth, but that's not part of the story. Just because it's true doesn't mean it belongs.

Similarly: In general, you almost never need to say "research has found that..."-- that's what the citation establishes. Likewise "we suggest/think/propose" -- yes, that's how the idea got into the manuscript. Cutting those almost always helps the writing feel crisper and more active.

Feminist social epistemology teaches us that diversity is a *requirement* for scientific excellence. We need each other to know the world. We need each other to solve the thorny problems that threaten our existence. Knowing the world is a group project, and everyone has something to contribute.

@propublica.org reporter Brett Murphy with an explosive scoop. This is insanity.
ProPublica just obtained a remarkable directive to those remaining at USAID: Empty the safes with the classified and personnel records and then ...

"Shred as many documents first, and reserve the burn bags for when the shredder becomes unavailable or needs a break."

The email came from from the agency's acting executive secretary. I asked Kel McClanahan, a national security attorney, if this was legal. He said: "No it is not," citing the Federal Records Act. "Classified records are still federal records."

But this move is a cut. We are hearing approximately 150 SROs will be removed, out of approximately 600. That's in line with Berg's numbers. Removing SROs will slow grant review, and that will reduce grant funding.

The SRO move is designed to look plausible. Looks like another "NIH" statement passed down by the Trump/MAGA political appointees. (We hear that DOGE people are showing up at #NIH meetings, like Soviet apparatchiks, to monitor NIH leaders.) This move is to harm NIH. Why? See below in thread:

When Musk’s role in govt or in FAA oversight was under consideration, perhaps it was fair to say “raising concerns about conflicts.” When he announced SpaceX would redesign the ATC system, that was at least a clear conflict. Now they’re buying SpaceX products to do it, it is just plain corruption.
