Everyone hates Donald Trump, so let's not go directly after him! Brilliant!

As I’ve asked many times now, what constituencies does a university president represent? Because too often, the answer seems to not include anyone who works or studies at the university, and that seems like a problem.

I can only assume the people not saying this never saw it. To this day my mom says one of the worst parenting mistakes she made was letting me watch it. I whole heartedly agree.

It's an attempt to directly politicize higher ed in a way that it is not (despite right wing rhetoric) currently.

It's an attempt to bully higher ed into embracing "both sides" discourse similar to journalism. What really gives it away is that they are very clear that "viewpoint diversity" simply means GOP vs. Democrats, a very impoverished and flawed notion.

Why is reducing ideological bias a goal? To what end? Politics is almost always a fight over values, not facts. I don’t care if I am “biased” towards social justice, whatever that means.

This is why folks should not waste time designing the perfect and optimized system of higher education and R&D investment. That’s unnecessary when an underinvested system is under attack. We should start by setting core guiding objectives and tripling the investment, and adjust as needed.

Perhaps the story “malicious wingnuts with horrible agenda release heavily edited emails and files to newspaper journos who stampede them into print, telling the public they reveal a terrifying scandalous outrage, but actually it’s just crank horseshit and everyone involved knows it” sounds familiar

The thing that makes me the most annoyed about this is that we've seen this precise playbook so many times, right?
This is the Twitter files, this is the Lab League, this is the Quote and Quote whistleblowers at gender clinics. It's like, ooh, there's secret documents, and everybody constructs it as a scandal.
It's all about why weren't they more transparent with the medical records, blah, blah, blah, and then on the merits, there's nothing there.
There will be a slow drip of light coverage that's sort of like, and it doesn't really appear that there was anything here, but we've all learned a lesson.
So I found an academic article called
Climate Gate Public Opinion and the Loss of Trust, which shows that it appears not entirely, but mostly due to the scandal. US popular support for climate change fell from 71% to 57%. Almost a 15% drop in two years.

What I think people need to take from JD is that he and others see the future of the party as a viciously, overtly racist Christian nationalist party and they are laying the groundwork to be successful in that future while Democratic consultants are stuck in the 90s.

For a long time I've wanted a sense of how trump has or hasn't interacted with chatbots (we know he posts a lot of slop sure). And this TIME anecdote about Grok arguably leading Trump into war is just extremely bracing
Since returning to office, Trump has marveled at AI’s capabilities. He is increasingly in thrall to the tech executives courting him. In December 2025, Elon Musk returned to the Oval Office for a clandestine meeting. Trump spent hours asking Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, questions about his presidency and legacy, according to an official present. At the time, Trump was ordering missile strikes against Venezuelan boats he alleged were smuggling drugs into the U.S. He asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if the U.S. captured Maduro. According to the official present, the chatbot responded that Maduro was a repressive and deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall. After Trump ordered the mission to seize Maduro, the following month, celebrations broke out in the streets. Trump, according to officials, came away thinking Grok was ingenious.

Is there any chance, I wondered to myself, that this book foregoes saccharine and mistaken appeals to Abe Lincoln? Nope. In the foreword, Jonathan Haidt invokes the "better angels" line from the First Inaugural, failing - as almost every politician does - the "and what happened next?" challenge.
In the polarized America of today, we desperately need leaders who see this danger, understand its causes, and show us a way out. We need figures who rouse the "better angels of our nature," as Lincoln later put it. We need leaders like Governor Spencer Cox.

To clarify, I get why Biden apologists say this, but I'm seeing a lot of Biden critics saying it too, and it really does seem like an attempt to strike the pose of being "reasonable" by taking a position that's popular but strikes me as, at best, unproven and unprovable.

redstateprof.bsky.social @redstateprof.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
This position that "reasonable" people are taking that Gaza would have gone exactly the same way even had the US cutoff weapons strikes me as bizarre and based in magical thinking. I'm not clear why so many people are just asserting this as self-evidently true.
