In 1974, Cornell lecturer Lin Farley began recognizing a pattern in the experiences women shared in her Women and Work course: women were being pushed out of jobs by men’s sexual behavior. Farley coined the term, “sexual harassment.”

📣Out now on #firstview! Emile Chabal @emile-chabal.bsky.social, Angéline Escafré-Dublet (Université Lumière Lyon 2) and Daniel A. Gordon @oxhistoryfaculty.bsky.social on 'Insiders and Outsiders: The Historiography of Immigration in France' 👉Read open access: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
The history of immigration has become a dynamic subfield of French history since the 1970s. We examine its origins in both academic and activist milieus, and we consider its development in relation to some of the most important civic debates that have animated the French public sphere. In particular, we explore how histories of immigration expose some of the central concerns of modern French history – about the boundaries of citizenship, the power of the state, and the revolutionary potential of those who are kept on the margins of Frenchness. We also discuss the relationship between French and foreign scholars of immigration, and, by way of conclusion, we consider the future of a field that faces threats from a growing political backlash to immigration.

Best (unscientific) way I've thought about no-laptops policy is that attention is like static electricity. Devices allow it to continually diffuse ambiently. In their absence, attention gathers, accumulates, and then erupts into excited discussion. It's great!

See this chart? Workers’ share of the nation’s income is at the lowest it’s been since records began in 1947. Corporate profits’ share, on the other hand, is the highest it’s been since 1950. This is why we must build back worker power.

This is one of the objections I have when people talk about how useful LLMs can be for literature searches or for any kind of search, really. Even beyond the biases that inevitably (and, in some cases, intentionally) show up, part of a good literature search is seeing information *in context.*

Dolly Parton logged a combined total of 115 years of union membership. Throughout her working life, the “9 to 5” singer/songwriter carried the union cards of two major unions: The American Federation of Musicians Local 257 in Nashville — for 58 years. SAG-AFTRA — for 57 years. HAPPY LABOR DAY!

I’m just a historian so don’t ask me but I’m sure there’s a historical precedent for a society that turned a blind eye to far right agitation but crushed left wing activism with all its might and resources. Huh. Wonder what happened with that.

And I won’t bother to mention her name, because it is not important, and anyway, now she is dead.
