With the Bayeux Tapestry back in England for the first time in almost a thousand years, Dr Emily Winkler looks at what its embroidered scenes still tell us about kings, comets and a cross-Channel world older than either nation ⬇️ bit.ly/3TiqEsC
Graphic featuring a detail from the Bayeux Tapestry showing two embroidered figures. Alongside it is a quote from Dr Emily Winkler: “The Tapestry offers a glimpse of an eleventh-century political world more intricate and interconnected than one of ‘two nations’, involving friends, neighbours, and rivals from around the North Sea. It illuminates the lives of peoples who lived along and travelled across the Channel and the sea.” She is credited as Lecturer in Medieval History and author of Pocket Bayeux Tapestry.

What do ships show us in the Bayeux Tapestry? Dr Emily Winkler (Lecturer in Medieval History, Hertford College & St Edmund Hall) steers us through some of the Tapestry's most famous boat imagery, from the Earl Harold of Wessex's fleet, to William of Normandy's flagship Mora - a gift from his wife.
