‘Shocking and sobering’: UK bird populations fall to lowest level on record
Nearly half of species are in decline, with farmland birds and seabirds the worst hit, conservation bodies have said Wild bird populations in the UK have fallen to their lowest level since records began, figures show, with nearly half of species in decline. Figures produced by leading nature conservation bodies for the government show that average populations across 132 native breeding species fell by 19% between 1970 and 2025, with farmland birds and seabirds the worst hit in recent years. I notice the right wing extremist media getting frantic about talk of rejoining the EU - but all they can counter with is 'project fear' imaginings about how bad it would be to be back in. I've not seen any of them point to a single Brexit benefit that we would lose. 🤔

'Odd' that we didn't have a 'national security emergency' over small boat crossings before Brexit and the last Tory Govt (with Home Office ministers like now-Refuk Braverman and 'Honest' Bob). And we didn't need to leave the ECHR or suspend international obligations with regard to asylum seekers.

Adding folic acid to brown and white flour can prevent an estimated 200 neural tube defects each year (about a 20% reduction) including spina bifida and anencephaly and will also improve red blood cell formation over the wider population while saving the NHS an estimated £20 million over 10 years.
