NYC is opening 160 car-free (but treat-filled) streets and plazas to enjoy fun and safe fall festivities this spooky season. Find one near you at nyc.gov/trickorstreets.

Never forget when Shoup taught us that the value of parking spaces in the USA is likely more than the value of all the roads and all the cars that drive on them.

Additionally the context of it being an automated block is even worse. It doesn't matter how much data you have to back up why a block was done, the takeaway of "ToS head posts about decisions and then auto-blocks users responding" is what is seen regardless of how accurate you think that is.

There's no job description req to discuss policy decisions on personal accounts - in fact doing so is not a good choice at all. Aaron can block whoever he wants from a personal account but what we have now is the company representative blocking users from a de facto official moderation account.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

Also the DeLorme, but I honestly didn't use paper maps because I didn't really navigate anywhere I wasn't familiar with on my own until after GPS was standard.

I just solved this by growing up in a town with only a few dozens total roads (of which maybe six to ten were main roads that went anywhere?) so it was simple. If you had to go far, you just drove an hour down a set of memorized routes to the single interstate in the state.

(Side note, I led the flight team for a production of Peter Pan many years ago and the best stunt we did in the whole show was to fly Peter from the stage edge up, over the audience to land her on the balcony rail where she would lean out on her cable over the crowd for "do you believe in fairies".)

This extends to blocking too. Aisle entrances/exits are good, but actual show taking place out into the audience feels far more interactive and adds so much depth to the experience.

Don't do house lights, do festoons (cafe string lights) over the audience. (The arena tour of Quidam did this to amazing effect.)

As a professional theatrical designer (trained in lighting), breaking the proscenium (real or metaphorical) is one of my favorite design elements. Scenic and lighting elements that extend into the audience break down the physical divide between the house and the stage.

They're technical people. I can describe the evolution of the infrastructure all I want. The damage has been done to the reputation and they have no reason to trust the platform regardless of the technology.

Enrico🐀 @redbassett.com · 01/10/2026
In early days there was a lot of misinfo on other platforms (especially Mastodon) about how bsky couldn't ever be decentralized and was exclusively for-profit. This couldn't be won by technical arguments, many potential users saw it as a company problem. I have many friends who will never try bsky.

Enrico🐀 @redbassett.com · 01/10/2026
Unfortunately a common attitude for the company is "people are only angry at us because they don't understand the tech well enough". It's been said about "vibe coding", "decentralization", and now "trust and safety".

Especially as ToS leadership, if you're seeing actual abusive interactions or spam, great, follow your ToS policies and enforce. But having a major company rep say "yeah, I block a small vocal part of our userbase" is really a bad look for the whole brand.

Enrico🐀 @redbassett.com · 01/10/2026
If bsky employees want a more curated usage I don't have any issue with them running alternate accounts that don't advertise their affiliation with the company. Can't have cake and eat it too.
130
Enrico🐀 @redbassett.com · 01/10/2026
We don't have any open records requirements for bsky employees like we do for politicians but it's a very slippery slope to both advertise your association with leadership of the company on a profile and also to block people from that profile.
230
Enrico🐀 @redbassett.com · 01/10/2026
The issue here isn't that people don't understand the nuances of the blocking decision making properly, it's the optics of blocking users when you are a public face for the company.

(The wear marks should be noted visually on inspection, I know they aren't seeing the wing with slats and reverser deployed on a normal walk around)

Don't know enough on the specific aircraft to analyze the dark photo myself, but that *should* be noticed by walk around and maintenance inspections if it's an issue, *but* generally crew don't mind someone flagging something that looks wrong, so I don't see any reason not to.

Generally speaking I do need AI boosters to understand that I’ve lost my career and future plans entirely to AI-based cost cutting. so any time you’re talking about tech you have to understand people whose livelihoods were destroyed by a thing they didn’t choose to adopt they’re gonna be prickly lol

As a professional user out in the field I use Aputure gear over Amaran (metal housings and water resistance matter to my daily use), but everything Aputure makes is such a change from where we were not long ago. I'm amazed at what we can do with LEDs now.

I'd also go for "class 3 on road only, no bike lanes" over a full ban, licensed/moped or not, but this does conflate with emotos and road licensing rules.

yeah in fairness this is the main reason why I don’t think they should make class 3s illegal right now. NJ fucked it up so badly that it’s made it very hard to use *any* e bikes

Enrico🐀 @redbassett.com · 28/09/2026
Also if we're restricting vehicles actual equipment to test is good, NYPD is famous for calling anything they want an ebike or moped and I really don't want cops anywhere trying to determine what should be classed as what by eye.
130
Enrico🐀 @redbassett.com · 28/09/2026
I'd support banning emotos except licensed motorcycles while keeping class 3. I'd also probably back class 3 sales restrictions and maybe consider bans. What I definitely fear is a NJ-style outlawing of normal bikes because people picture kids on electric dirt bikes when they hear "ebike".
120
Enrico🐀 @redbassett.com · 28/09/2026
First, all states should be fixed to the same definitions - outlawing a bike in NY that's within a class (in other states) that NY says is legal is bad. Second, I wish both the lawmakers and the journalists would address emotos. These gets considered "ebikes" by most and derail actual bike policy.

Also side guards. Better to not hit anyone in the first place, but keeping them out from under the vehicle if they are hit is key. (And speaking as someone who drives trucks professionally, the American stigma against cabovers is really dumb, they are so much better for city driving)

There has been some good improvement and expansion of ML tools in the "AI is here" years but exactly, nothing getting actual use is all that different from what was being developed before genAI took off.
