Agreed. I read for my own benefit and not because I intend endorse or support anyone. When I as an individual understand different views better it benefits all. Hence reading is good for society. If you take the retired librarians view and apply it to society level where do you end up?

Europe desperately wants the US to be Normal Again so it doesn’t actually have to engage with any of the hard work (and spending) that engaging with reality actually involves. So if Rubio gives a speech with ~better vibes~ it gets lapped up, even if it’s meaningless on substance.

Verification (establishing truth), Deliberation (arguing about it), and Accountability (binding power to it). When these work, you have substance. When they break, you slide into performance, and eventually, simulation, and people recognise this, even if they don't use a shared terminology.

Fun beaver/fish interaction: When I approached this pond, I startled brown trout preparing to spawn below it (beavs filter sediment & keep downstream substrate clean). The fish dashed to the dam & hid in its base. Beavers created perfect spawning grounds: pristine gravel adjacent to dense cover! 🤯🦫🐟

Once again wondering how on Earth there aren't any movies, not even Finnish ones, about Finnish WW2 long-range patrols. The story of Aimo Koivunen and his week with methamphetamine is probably not even the craziest one. There's plenty to choose from. (A Thread.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aimo_Ko...
A screenshot of Aimo Koivunen's Wikipedia page.

"
Koivunen was a Finnish soldier, assigned to a ski patrol on 15 March 1944 along with several other Finnish soldiers. Three days into their mission on 18 March, the group was attacked and surrounded by Soviet forces, from whom they were able to escape.[3] Koivunen became fatigued after skiing for a long distance but could not stop. He was carrying his patrol's entire supply of army-issued Pervitin, or methamphetamine, a stimulant used to remain awake while on duty.[4] He consumed the entire supply of Pervitin, and had a short burst of energy, but soon entered a state of delirium and eventually lost consciousness. Koivunen later recalled waking up the following morning, separated from his patrol and having no supplies.[5]

In the following days, Koivunen escaped Soviet forces once again, was injured by a land mine, and stayed in a ditch for a week, waiting for help.[5][4] In the week that he was gone, he subsisted only on pine buds and a single Siberian jay that he caught and ate raw.[5][4] Having skied more than 400 km (248.5 mi), he was later found and admitted to a nearby hospital, where his heart rate was measured at 200 beats per minute, and he weighed only 43 kg (94.8 lbs).[5][4]"

Note that this decision in itself is not Trump’s fault as such, although his reign of error surely doesn’t help. The decision was expected, as the threat against Finland is these days less “a short war against heavily mechanized enemy” and more “a long conflict against human waves.”

Just a reminder that Sikorski used to be a war correspondent in his youth, and there are rumors he actually participated in combat with the Mujahediin against the Soviets. The Muskovite - or the Ketamite - on the other hand is a blowhard whose key talent is inventing stories about himself.
A photograph of current Polish foreign minister Sikorski in the 1980s, when he was a war correspondent in Afghanistan, with the Mujahediin that were fighting against Soviet occupation. In the picture we see a youngish man in olive green combat jacket, with traditional Afgani headwear and a scarf, military binoculars hanging from his neck. On the background there is sparsely vegetated, hilly terrain. The sky is clear blue.
