🏺 On this day there was a procession from the Eleusinion in Athens to Eleusis for the Mysteries (τὰ Μυστήρια). It began late in the day and did not arrive in Eleusis (about ten miles from Athens) until nighttime. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleusinian_My…

Obviously the people making a stink about the B65 bus and open streets aren't concerned about sidewalk access or blocked bus stops. A lot of people's "accessibility" concerns only go so far as "Can I access a parking spot in front of my house and every destination in the city?"

Reader comment from the NYTimes that says "No wonder there aren't any literary greats of the stature of Joyce and Woolf in the 21st century."

I truly don’t understand this “transplant” nonsense. The whole THING about NYC is that ppl come here from other places to mutate into New Yorkers! TO SEE IF THEY CAN BE KING OF THE HILL, TOP OF THE HEAP! Imho a rando who moved here a year ago is the MOST NY person. Welcome Ohio rando, have a bagel

If you are writing about this crash and focusing on helmets or the fine print of the Citibike user agreement and not on the likelihood the truck operator either ran a red light or failed to yield then you are doing a terrible job and should reflect on it
The intersection where the crash occurred. There is no protected right turn signal; a bicyclist or pedestrian traveling west or turning on to 1st Ave would have the right of way

There’s more to be said about the relationship between Pinker-style stardom and the state of academia. Not because academia is Woke, but because star systems loosen rigor at the top while solid scholarship becomes a dead end lower down. Shoddy celebrities and broke PhDs proceed from the same machine

So rather than increase faculty payroll and lower student:teacher ratios, UMass would rather spend it on Claude. I would argue that a better investment would be hiring 100-200 tenure-line faculty.

I worked for 20+ years trying to make education more engaging and personalized and the key isn’t fucking AI, it’s spending enough money that you can cut class sizes in half and then slowing the fuck down so you can have actual conversations. All that costs SERIOUS $$$, so eat AI instead, everyone.

The article uses the word "jump" a few times but its hard to tell if it's figurative or literal. I hope it's figurative because there is nowhere to jump off a carrier that isn't the same as leaping off a tall building

If you're watching the eclipse today, you're seeing why the Athenians called the last day of the month, ἕνη καὶ νέα, "the old and the new." As the moon passes by the sun we're literally passing from the "old" moon (ἕνη) to the "new" (νέα)

This is a bad example because a lot of museum guards at the Met are talented artists. The battle cry of the Humanities is basically "humans are more than their jobs."
Put more simply: documents and interviews establish how a first-time contractor was paid millions of dollars to apply a novel solution designed by a golf club manager to a national landmark.

“It’s like asking the museum guard to restore a painting in the Met,” said Charles Birnbaum, the president of the Cultural Landscape Foundation, a nonprofit that has sued unsuccessfully to stop the work.
