Lord knows how many millions were spent on the recent mega-dump of AI math proofs. A bunch of careless people with no appreciation for what they are doing should not have those kinds of resources

If the average mathematician makes $100K/year (and I'm sure the average mathematician makes less than that) you could have paid 250 of them to work for a year on a better solution *and* they would have spent that money around town, in their local economies, on groceries and movies

Terence Tao's salary is public record and he gets paid a ton (good for him) but, if you take the average of the cost estimates ($25M), what OpenAI spent could have funded Tao to do nothing but Navier-Stokes for 40 years

What's infuriating to me is how much money these Vandals had for their recent vandalism thanks to the slow vandalism of decades of divestment from public institutions and accumulation in private hands. The estimates I've seen for what OpenAI spent on the Navier-Stokes solution are $10-$40 million!

So what Tao is describing here is basically intellectual Vandalism, in a literal storming in and sacking everything, burn it or steal it sense

Terence Tao (@tao@mathstodon.xyz)
Use of AI tools, when done responsibly, can support not just the initial generation of a solution, but all of the valuable followup activities that traditionally flow out of that solution. But at the...

the funny thing about this of course is that "athenian democracy" was a cautionary tale to the framers, who saw it as unstable and prone to demagogues and tyrants like the one rubio works for

Obviously the people making a stink about the B65 bus and open streets aren't concerned about sidewalk access or blocked bus stops. A lot of people's "accessibility" concerns only go so far as "Can I access a parking spot in front of my house and every destination in the city?"

If you are writing about this crash and focusing on helmets or the fine print of the Citibike user agreement and not on the likelihood the truck operator either ran a red light or failed to yield then you are doing a terrible job and should reflect on it
The intersection where the crash occurred. There is no protected right turn signal; a bicyclist or pedestrian traveling west or turning on to 1st Ave would have the right of way

There’s more to be said about the relationship between Pinker-style stardom and the state of academia. Not because academia is Woke, but because star systems loosen rigor at the top while solid scholarship becomes a dead end lower down. Shoddy celebrities and broke PhDs proceed from the same machine

So rather than increase faculty payroll and lower student:teacher ratios, UMass would rather spend it on Claude. I would argue that a better investment would be hiring 100-200 tenure-line faculty.

I worked for 20+ years trying to make education more engaging and personalized and the key isn’t fucking AI, it’s spending enough money that you can cut class sizes in half and then slowing the fuck down so you can have actual conversations. All that costs SERIOUS $$$, so eat AI instead, everyone.
