I will never forget when Mikami-san rushed me into a side office in Osaka and showed me the controller. “Please authorize this for Xbox.” I did.

Here's possibly the coolest way to advertise Steel Battalion for Xbox in this Japanese TV commercial. The mech game, also from a Japanese studio comprised of former Human Entertainment developers, (in?)famously shipped with a humongous, custom controller with dozens of inputs #retro #gaming #Xbox 🎮

Dieselpunk mecha advancing on Japan, controlled by big ass controllers! Part of Microsoft's charm offensive to win over Japanese gamers, showcased here in Famitisu Xbox Feb 2002's issue: Tekki, aka Steel Battalion.

Two pages of the four-page feature on Steel Batallion with renders of the Vertical Tanks, gameplay screenies, and a photo of the near-metre long controller with its dozens of buttons, levers, and switches.

Steel Battalion on Xbox (2002) 🎮 Pilot a ‘Vertical Tank’ mecha with an EPIC controller boasting 44 inputs—joysticks, pedals, throttle, and yes, an eject button! It’s not gaming; it’s an adventure.

'Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor' released on this day in 2012. FromSoft's attempt to re-envision the Steel Battalion franchise sans elaborate cockpit peripheral, but instead with the power of Kinect. The end result is no less than a disaster due to unresponsive motion controls.

I was plugged into Tips & Tricks during my formative gaming years. Reading guides to games I've never heard of, on consoles I didn't own, was a fun way to experience them vicariously! Today I'm mostly RSS feeds but I'll still peruse some Dengeki! I wonder who won that Steel Battalion controller.

Video game magazine Tips & Tricks issue 94, from December 2002. The cover features Ratchet, Blinx, and Fox McCloud, making it rather fuzzy this month.
