this might be my favorite correlation-not-causation pattern that the LoseIt app has ever inferred (I eat two Pop Tarts before I head out for a long run each Saturday)
[Rod Flanders “iron helps us play!” voice] eating toaster pastries helps keep you on track! I very much do not EAT less on those days, I simply burn far more

"... the modern use of the term “antisemitism” to refer exclusively to hostility against Jews distorts its original meaning and erases the Semitic identity of Arabs and Palestinians." This gem is from an early draft resolution of "Zionism is Racism" Green party resolution

I am more tolerant of one-state solutions than quite a lot of people but, without being funny, there is no just One State that is just called Palestine, let alone "a Palestinian State."

Which is all a long-winded way of saying: These debates about Zionism and anti-Zionism are mostly unhelpful right now, and I wish everyone could just drop these terms unless speaking historically and talk about their political vision for the future in other terms.

My dad would let me play Doom on his Mac from time to time, but I never learned how to turn the speakers off. I once got so spooked playing it I had to pause and leave the room, but was stuck hearing the creepy music playing all through the top floor of the house

What people fail to understand is also that Zionism was not just a plan/ideology for Jews in Palestine, it was also a vision for Jewish *diasporic* identity. Much of Zionist activity has always taken place outside Palestine/Israel and was about communal identity and politics. Hence the attachment.

Absolutely this! Which also makes any discussion around 2SS difficult because very few people really know what they'd compromise on for the sake of keeping Israel"Jewish"

My break with Zionism came from realising I couldn't reconcile it with my belief in liberal democracy, but I still tend to call myself a post-Zionist because you otherwise get so bogged down litigating definitions!

Also, this is a fun example because a module on historical engineering disasters: - could be genuinely useful as part of an Engineering degree - would be almost entirely useless for any History student

The snarky compromise is that everyone should study Econ 101 to learn about opportunity costs. Nothing bad could possibly happen if you make a generation of students take Econ 101

The Knesset barred today the only two Palestinian led parties from running in the coming election. According to an overwhelming majority in the Knesset, the constitutional meaning of a Jewish State is a state where Palestinian citizens cannot run for parliament.

Will keep boringly saying this (no disrespect to OP): it's not a health surcharge. It's not hypothecated to the NHS; you can't choose not to pay it and thereby eschew healthcare. You could equally call it an education or roads surcharge. It's using the NHS's sanctified status to rip off immigrants.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

Just came across this insane Wikipedia article about a case I'm surprised isn't more famous – a bonkers attempt by some monks to win a theological debate by faking an apparition of Mary, involving cross-dressing, drugs, a secret crane and an exploding chair, that ended in their public execution. 🧵

"Mr President, we cannot allow the Cheese Gap to get any larger! This calls for decisive action and Wisconsin Comté"
Mexico's economy ministry and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative did not respond to requests for comment, though the U.S. agency has previously stated its views on the EU's Geographical Indication (GI) product protection scheme.

"The EU continues to seek to expand its harmful Gl system within its territory and beyond," the trade office said in an April report.

It said that forcing dairy producers outside the bloc to use descriptors such as "imitation feta" or "asiago-style" was costly and unnecessary and contributes to the $1.2 billion U.S. cheese trade deficit with the bloc.

He's heinous, but the 2SS is basically Zionism within stricter borders. Palestinians might or might not support it depending on what concessions they get, but it's deliberately opposed to binationalism

Insofar as Zionism is just "believing in a Jewish country" he's not exactly wrong, though? It just shows how meaninglessly broad that definition's become in a lot of debates
