I feel like there's a cohort of us who got on the internet before "social media" and made all sorts of healthy friendships through forums or livejournal or what have you and thus, while everyone's like SOCIAL MEDIA FUELS COMPARISON AND MISERY we're like, but that's just where my friends live.

It's always fun to see how colleges spin declines in their main US News ranking. A few write scathing critiques (hi, Vanderbilt!), but most pivot to other components or rankings to try to keep the good times rolling.

How Colleges Spin Rankings Outcomes
Every outcome in the U.S. News rankings seemed to be good news this year according to a wave of press releases that touted how well colleges performed—even in cases where they slipped.

Judith Butler Apology Form
Date:
Reason for behavior:
( ) The media convinced me that feminism was solved in the 1980s
( ) I miss not thinking about gender
( ) I was jealous of their nonbinary swag
( ) I never actually read their work
( ) I didn't realize how much of society is built on gender
( ) Mercury was in retrograde
-------------
( ) I will hereby respect Judith Butler and I will NOT talk down on the best feminist thinker of our lifetimes

Huh. Today in "always look up the etymology because sometimes you're just repeating a myth but sometimes it's weirder and more incredible than you could have possibly imagined" www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/c...
Screenshot of Merriam Webster etymology note for cockamamie:
By the look and sound of it, cockamamie (also spelled "cockamamy") could have something to do with a rooster and the outrageous sound it makes. But in fact, cockamamie is believed to be an altered form of the term decalcomania, which refers to the process, invented in the mid-19th century, of transferring pictures and designs from specially prepared paper to surfaces such as glass or porcelain. (The word referring to the picture or design itself, decal, is a shortening of decalcomania.) The word decalcomania comes from French, with décalcomanie combining the verb décalquer, meaning "to trace" or "to transfer by tracing," and -manie, meaning "-mania." Starting in the 1930s, painted strips of paper with images capable of being transferred to the skin were called decals or—in children's slang—cockamamies. Those familiar with today's temporary tattoos will understand quickly that these were regarded by many as silly novelties, lending the word cockamamie the necessary leeway for application to anything ridiculous.

Excellent thread! There *are* rewards for being A Good Guy Who Speaks Up even if they are not immediately obvious or publicly bestowed. First, integrity is its own reward. Maybe you didn’t save the world or change hearts & minds. But if you held the line on not making it worse, that’s something.

What gets me, apart from these people being absolute monsters, is that the whole thing is predicated on the belief that testing is education. Like at least 3/4 of their project falls apart if we get rid of high stakes testing.

This is me also. I can rationalize a task taking longer if I’m teaching someone to do it, because that time will be worthwhile to both of us. I can’t rationalize it for a chatbot.

I do talk to my spouse and (teenage) kids in a family group chat, but not *exclusively* in the chat. We also talk to each other regularly! There are plenty of dinner preference conversations and school events etc that never hit the group chat.

Essentially it's the same as thinking customer service can be handled by all the well defined cases in a menu tree--an assumption that's ok if you're the provider and do not actually need people to be helped. But AI agents are like trying to get me to willingly call Comcast on a regular basis

Technology enthusiasts severely overestimate the average person’s desire or willingness or capacity to build and use AI agents. I understand some work roles that could mandate or encourage it but that is no way a tech revolution. Agents are best for structured, clearly delineated tasks.

I feel like I'm done blaming democratic consultants for the candidates going anti-trans. If that's your choice when the polls look like this, you're not pivoting to bigotry for expediency. You're doing it for love of the game. Or you're an idiot. Those feel like the two options.

I wonder if it’s not also a power thing? You show up with your own beverage, and they can’t play the host and offer you one. You’re self-sufficient, you don’t need the company. It also means the interviewer can’t play weird mind games analyzing whether/how you accept a drink they offer.

It reads as stealth Christian to me. Like, the religious context is explicitly where it came from for those who use it, but they act like if they don’t mention that context, it would just be a common secular concept. Outside a Christian context I think it’s weird.

It’s a metaphysical answer, but asking the question is a good place to start: noticing dissatisfaction, naming who you are now, naming what parts of you don’t fit anymore, starting to poke at why those parts no longer fit. Then you might notice what *does* fit better and chase that.
