Like the truck pulls in behind the horse and I’m like “yessssssss”. Like Velvet Goldmine actively has lines about glam rock emerging out of the dreariness of the war years and that is what this movie is doing and I couldn’t love it more.

I am definitely the audience for this. I don’t know if anyone else is. But I completely, instinctually get it and it feels like Velvet Goldmine (particularly the first 5 - 10 minutes of it). I’m gonna be insufferable.

Here's Mitt Romney explaining why he's spending something like $10,000 a day on private security for him & his family because of the threats & why these threats, on behalf of Trump, were why GOP senators refused to vote to convict him & be done w/him in 2021. 2/

Romney: GOP members feared far-right violence ahead of key votes
According to Mitt Romney, some Republicans wanted to hold Donald Trump accountable, but they feared violence. That raises some uncomfortable questions.

It's strange to document all this and not explicitly pin Trump's violence fetish as being the obvious number one contributing factor. Just because his thirst for violent retribution in politics has blown back on him on occasion doesn't absolve him of blame.

I’m old, so I tend to use terms expansively and confrontationally and as shorthand. You can have your argument about that without me. I’m non-binary. I’m queer. I’m bisexual. I’m gay. I’m a lesbian. I’m a dyke. I’m part of the trans community. And I’ve earned all the words I choose to use for myself

But overall, I check in with myself a lot about whether I’m pursuing comfort or safety. I’m also not saying you don’t deserve comfort! I do! You do! But. Sometimes we can make life safer and more comfy for other people by stretching our own comfort zones and challenging fear that doesn’t serve us

Whether that’s on the internet, to the subway proselytizers, to family members, to my professional clients, etc. Are there times where I am deliberately vague about my life for safety? You bet. I travel alone a lot and it’s not always chill.

And look I’m old, I’m white, have financial resources, work for myself, have a high risk tolerance and have a lot of practice at this. You are not me. But being outspokenly queer is actually an ethical obligation for me in my circumstances.

I think everyone needs to differentiate between being unsafe and uncomfortable. And being willing to lean into that discomfort and come out in those contexts can, in fact, make other people safer.

I’m going to say something unpopular for National Coming Out Day. And that’s that while your safety absolutely comes first - especially in the current global political climate - and you are never obligated to come out especially if it would harm you….

But this situation is exactly why you CAN’T have a death penalty in a functioning democracy, because even if someone arguably deserves to die for a crime, you always wind up here.

It was three guys, bags over their heads, tied to a tree. A handful of shooters for each guy. Efficient. Maybe not as bloody as you’d think. Shocking in that you can tell the moment between someone being alive and someone being just some flesh that doesn’t go anymore. Not so shocking in other ways.
